Navigating Christmas in a new relationship
Christmas is a time of celebration, of hope and joy and merriment, particularly if you are in the first throws of a new romance. However, the reality of the season does not always add up to our expectations.

Weird and wonderful places to eat in the UK
Gloucester Studio, Gloucester If you like small and intimate, how about eating in a shed? This may not sound like everyone’s idea of haute cuisine, but behind a normal terraced house in Gloucester, a past MasterChef semi-finalist Kathryn Minchew has installed a Scandinavian Kota hut, which seats 8-10 people. Inside, there’s a roaring fire and guests are seated on reindeer hide covered benches, where they will enjoy a ten-course banquet with each dish cooked over the coals.

The Grown-Up Test: Ardal O'Hanlon
What did your parents teach you? They told us children to respect people and don’t judge people too harshly. That was a very strong message in our house. If you came in with some scandalous story they would say: if you didn’t see it, you don’t know the full story. Give people a bit of leeway, you don’t know what they’re going through. Childhood pet? I had a budgie called Kiki. She was a much-loved bird but possibly not the most cared for pet in the world.

Opinion: We’ve become the no-rest generation
Walking past the play area on a recent trip to my local park, I saw what has become a familiar sight. A couple of women, quite clearly past childbearing age, looking after some young children. The children were all about five years old, letting off steam after a day shut in the classroom. Heading home, I passed a neighbour, well into her sixties, walking her two grandchildren the not-inconsiderable distance back from school; something I’d seen her do day in, day out for the past four years.
My health story: early hearing loss
I knew the game was up a couple of years ago when I started working at a small, boutique PR agency. It was bad enough on the first day when I walked in and a sea of young faces turned towards me wondering whose mother had arrived to hand them their packed lunch. Or that’s certainly how I felt as I sat down at my desk, flushing with embarrassment at being the only ‘oldie’ in the office.
10 ways to get back into dating when over 50
Much as we’d all like to meet that someone special, whatever our age, making the leap from thinking about it to taking action can take time and courage. But first things first: rather than getting into a stew about what will happen when you do meet someone you like (and all the attendant worries that go with that special moment), simply take a deep breath, step out of your comfort zone, put yourself in a place where you may meet someone new and all the rest will follow.
People We Love: Rose Tremain
Why write your memoirs now? I’ve used my own biography very sparingly in my fiction – just a scene here or an anecdote there. This means that, after 40 years of writing, I have a thousand memories locked away, unused. So I thought I would try to write them as they were – before it’s too late – and give myself a clearer perspective on my childhood and how it formed me as a writer.
