For the next six weeks, Arrowtown Peonies’ Jan and Murray McWhirter will be flat out picking and packing 60,000-odd stems destined for export, and another 5000 for local sale. Picked as tight buds, which will last up to a month in the chiller, Murray says the main offshore markets are North America, Japan, China, Taiwan and eastern Europe. Blooms are airfreighted to Auckland, where they get an MPI check before being flown overseas.
