I threw My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh across the room. Just a few chapters in and I felt attacked. The book, highly recommended by friends, was uncomfortably familiar. It was a Wednesday, I wasnā€™t working much that week and I was reading in bed. The protagonistā€”who rarely leaves her apartment except for coffee and sleeping pillsā€”felt too close for comfort. ā€œI am not like that,ā€ I said out loud. And I know Iā€™m right.

Virky Juanda, the bartender behind En Par, proves you do not need fancy tools to craft a good drink. Heading to a bar for cocktails after work used to be my go-to way to unwind. But with the economy looking more uncertain by the day, that feels like an indulgence I cannotĀ quite justify. The alternative is to enjoy the same post-work treat at home. But since I amĀ not a beer drinker and refuse to stock up on six-packs, learning how to make my favorite cocktails feels like the next logical step.
