INTRODUCTION Apical periodontitis (AP) is a chronic disease in which endodontic infection induces an inflammatory reaction within the periapical tissues, resulting in bone resorption and lesion formation (Márton & Kiss, 2014; Nair, 1997; Ricucci & Siqueira, 2010). A thorough root canal treatment (RCT) can prevent or treat AP (Ng et al., 2011a). According to the literature, the estimated weighted success rates of primary and secondary RCTs range between 68%–85% and 70%–86%, respectively.
