Doomben Preview | Racing and Sports
3 minute read Co-trainer Corey Geran is still on a high after two recent Stakes wins and is hopeful Mahbaby can make it three at Doomben on Saturday. Mahbaby was entered for both the Listed Recognition Stakes and Listed Tattersalls Classic but Geran has preferred the latter as the target for the six-year-old. "It was a hard decision but she's never been past 1200 metres and I'm more inclined to try her against fillies and mares where she's a genuine chance," Geran said.

Lemoine's debut signifies Dynamo culture change
When Tab Ramos was named the Head Coach of the Houston Dynamo, engaged minds connected his youth development work and coaching to the future of the Dynamo. Sure, there was his coaching the U.S. U20 national team but that was preceded by working with youth players of all ages. Did this hire signal a move towards youth development in soccer-rich Houston? This city has had a large history of players going into MLS that dates back to the first year of the league.
Three Houston Dynamo takeaways from the 3-3 draw against LAFC
1.) UP FOR THE MOMENT Just think of how pumped and excited the Dynamo players had to be to get real live competition and the measuring stick of LAFC. This was great entertainment and fun to watch! In fact I think it was a great release for all of us to see the Dynamo finally get their first game. Despite Carlos Vela not being available for LAFC, you are still going up against one of the most unpredictable attacks in the league led by the wide play of Diego Rossi and Brian Rodriguez.
Houston Dynamo: What is the biggest talking point ahead of #MLSisBack opener vs. LAFC?
With the postponement of DC United and Toronto FC (now playing Monday morning) and the withdrawal of FC Dallas and Nashville SC, there is no doubt the storyline coming from Orlando is if this tournament will be completed or not in the “bubble.” There is sadly a daily COVID-19 watch to see if players are testing positive and this is taxing on MLS, staff and players that are competing.
Thomas Müller is not a ball boy
You might just remember the moment. Thomas Müller had debuted against Argentina as a 20 year old and had been dispatched to the post match press conference as the next hope for Germany. Then-Argentina coach Diego Maradona, also at the press conference, joked of Müller that he thought a ball boy had a arrived. [WATCH] Maradona would leave the press conference and Müller vowed to Maradona, “you will remember me” after that March 2010 friendly.
Match of the Day Review: Dortmund 4-0 Schalke 04 as Bundesliga restarts during COVID-19
Borussia Dortmund v. Schalke may have been the feature match heading into this weekend, and the re-start of the Bundesliga, but when the “smoke” cleared one team emerged dominant. The other was dismantled, blown out and torn apart. Dortmund looked very sharp, despite the break for COVID-19, and was particularly dangerous in transition with Julian Brandt, Thorgan Hazard and Erling Haaland. The trio would produce a gorgeous first goal with Brandt releasing Hazard on the right after a subtle touch.
Tomorrow morning and the “Bundesliga Breakfast Show” can’t come quick enough!
The Westfalenstadion, commonly known as the Signal Iduna Park, will host Dortmund vs. Schalke 04 on Saturday. Photo/Map: Arne Müseler / arne-mueseler.com / CC-BY-SA-3.0 We all need are fix of competitive football and it will come in the form of the Bundesliga in Germany. Things kick off in big fashion with the “Revierderby” between Dortmund and Schalke (8:30 a.m. CT on FS1) which, for me, is the best match of the weekend. 🐝 🆚 ⚒️ Who are you backing?
4 American players to watch in the Bundesliga
With a return to Bundesliga play so highly anticipated, I thought it might be time to re-visit those Americans that are playing in Germany. German clubs have taken a large interest in economically viable U.S. players who are coachable, versatile and have a high work ethic. These qualities, along with an ability to adapt in the high pressure league, have increased German interest in the American player and I profile some of the younger players below.
Thoughts on the new Austin FC Stadium
Last week I decided to make the road trip up to Austin to get an up close look at the stadium construction for Austin FC’s McKalla Place Stadium. Three questions with Matt Hermann of Talking Fussball podcast on the start of the German Bundesliga. Game on! Bundesliga returns on May 16
There is “light at the end of the tunnel” when it comes to professional sports and it comes in the form of the German Bundesliga. German Chancellor Angela Merkel has given the “go ahead” for a resumption of play on May 16th, behind closed doors. You can bet your “bottom dollar” that general sports fans and other professional leagues (Premier League, NBA, MLB, MLS, NFL) will be watching this reset to see how it functions in the age of COVID-19.

Looking back at the 1996 Colorado Rapids home opener versus the Dallas Burn
The first MLS match at Mile High Stadium, which featured the Colorado Rapids against the Dallas Burn, was one I will never forget as I was on the broadcast team with Bill Land (now with the NBA San Antonio Spurs). They say you only get one “curtain raiser” and on this day the Rapids delivered. Picture this,1996, two years after hosting the FIFA World Cup in the United States, MLS kicked off in cities around the U.S. Would professional soccer ever stick in this country?
Remembering the Houston Hotshots

Christian Ramirez talks Houston Dynamo front four, career and childhood on “Soccer Matters”
With MLS shutdown and no games, I find myself wanting to talk Houston Dynamo, futbol, roster and tactics. Of course, this is difficult without matches to analyze and form opinions about. In fact, this is an area in Houston that will hopefully rise when it comes to watching a Dynamo match. More analysis. More conversation which is all healthy and a necessary element in an MLS city.
Why football behind closed doors could be both intriguing and an opportunity
The synergy between football fans and their teams is the lifeblood of what moves the game. LAFC Manager Bob Bradley recently came out stating that “a game without fans has no soul.” He should know, having been in these situations as the manager of the Egyptian National team who had to go through that process. He, like everyone, also knows these are unprecedented times with the Coronavirus.

Astrodome Birthday Reminds of Houston Soccer History and Liga MX’s Club America
So today is the birthday of the world’s first multi purpose domed sports stadium, the Houston Astrodome, which opened in 1965! Houston Mayor Roy Hofheinz was a huge proponent of the “8th Wonder of the World” that housed the Houston Oilers, Houston Astros, Houston Rockets, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and monster rock bands like the Rolling Stones. I remember as a kid my Uncle and Aunt telling me they drove to Houston to see the Astrodome in their classic VW camper.
Can Dynamo gain more relevance in Houston?
Glenn Davis is the host of Soccer Matters on ESPN 97.5 FM every Tuesday 7-9 p.m. (podcasts) and a play-by-play announcer for ESPN, FOX Sports and local Houston Dynamo broadcasts. Davis was a professional soccer defender for the United Soccer League's Houston Dynamos in the 1980s and a youth coach for several years. I am climbing up on the soapbox after seeing the attendance at both the Dynamo and Dash games this weekend in a city of 6.5 million people.

7 bizarre injuries that ruined your fantasy baseball season
Benny Sieu, USA TODAY Sports Play fantasy sports long enough and you’ll have your night, week, or even entire season ruined by a key injury. But not all key injuries are created equal, and no matter your misfortune, you’ll have to admit you had it easy compared to the poor souls who owned the players detailed below. Unless you did have one of those guys on your fantasy team. In that case, we’re very sorry, and you might want to stop reading now.
Two-game NBA slate forces daily fantasy owners to pay up for stars
|
(Kim Klement, USA TODAY Sports) There are just two games in the NBA tonight, and there aren’t many options that stand. Even reliable Russell Westbrook ($9,000; 18.0% of your cap) is coming off a lackluster 29.3 fantasy point game against the Orlando Magic. Tim Duncan ($6,800; 13.6%) has a great matchup, but this will be his fifth game in seven days, and tonight could be a rest day. Dwyane Wade ($6,800; 13.6%) is expected back from a hamstring injury, but can you trust him?

Even with Mike Trout, it isn’t easy drafting from the No. 1 spot
|
Jayne Kamin-Oncea, USA TODAY Sports) The first pick in this season’s fantasy baseball drafts is a no-brainer. But waiting until every other team has rostered two players before making the next pick makes formulating a predraft strategy extremely difficult. That was the challenge I faced after taking outfielder Mike Trout first overall in the Fantasy Sports Trade Association’s experts draft last week in Las Vegas. I’ve already recapped what turned out to be a fairly unpredictable first round.

(Tim Fuller, USA TODAY Sports) Is your commissioner league fantasy football league team not performing up to par? Think you’ll need some outside help to salvage a decent finish? Don’t resign yourself to your friends’ ridicule just yet: make a trade instead. There’s enough season left that the right acquisition could give you a serious boost in the standings – and if you do your homework, you might be able to snag the right player without giving up too much in return.
The New England Patriots are the NFL's smartest spenders
Not all sports businesses are created equal - monetary resources, location, and ownership, among other factors, combine to give some franchises pronounced advantages. But some teams that appear challenged beat the odds and find success. We looked at both the standings and payrolls to find out which teams did the most with the least in the four major U.S. pro sports.
The rising costs of Super Bowl ads in one chart
The Super Bowl is the, well, Super Bowl of advertising. The telecast reliably reaches more than 100 million sets of U.S. eyeballs every year, and advertisers can't pass up the chance to influence that many people. Those huge audiences are so enticing that brands beat down the door to advertise during the game despite the exorbitant costs. How much? Well... That's the cost of 30 seconds of Super Bowl ad time every year since 1967, adjusted for inflation using the BLS's CPI inflation calculator.
