Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
Freelance sports correspondent for the local paper.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Trent Crimm from the independent.
What's your favorite social network?
Twitter
Why did you become a journalist?
I love to write, and journalism gave me an excuse to not be so introverted.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
A World War II veteran remembrance project, which captured a wealth of first-person accounts before they died.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Let your curiosity guide you. Good stories are everywhere, you just have to have the urge to seek them out.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
"Hey, you wanna go hang out at an abandoned railyard at 2 a.m. to see a rare train go by?"
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
The generic ones, that I'd get four times in a row to the same email.
What's your favorite drink?
Chai tea
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That local news — community news, is somehow 'less than' bigger-market news, when the truth is in many ways it's actually more important.
