INTRODUCTION Ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco, EC 4.1.1.39) is the enzyme responsible for CO2 fixation into ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP) in the Calvin–Benson–Bassham cycle (Bassham et al., 1950; Tabita et al., 2008). The essential function of Rubisco in photosynthesis makes the enzyme essential for all life on Earth. Rubisco is the most abundant enzyme on our planet (Ellis, 1979), amounting to an estimated 0.7 gigatons (Bar-On & Milo, 2019).
