Although she was only in her 20s, Sarah Polley was already a veteran actress when she set out to direct her first feature film. For this intended debut, she had written a screenplay about a child performer in a television series; familiar territory for the former star of Canadian programs Ramona (1988) and Road to Avonlea (1990-1996). After multiple rejections, however, this project was shelved.
