As unprecedented ballot shortages disrupted local polls and opened South Korea's election commission up to suspicion, a map purportedly showing voter turnout was shared in posts falsely claiming some counties had an overabundance of votes. The circulating voter turnout map does not match up with official figures, which show voter turnout did not exceed 100 percent. The platform that generated the map told AFP that an error in their system caused some votes to be counted twice.

As South Koreans cast early votes in June 3, 2026 local elections, social media users misleadingly shared screenshots of a Chinese-language post about the transportation of ballot boxes as supposed proof of interference. The person who moved the boxes, a naturalised South Korean citizen from China who has lived in the country for nearly two decades, told AFP he originally shared the video because he was proud to have taken part in the poll.

In the lead up to South Korea's local elections on June 3, an image of a campaign poster written in Chinese was shared in posts falsely claiming it was distributed by a Seoul district council candidate. The image reignited electoral fraud and anti-China claims that have frequently resurfaced as voters head to the polls, but it is in fact AI-generated. A party spokesperson told AFP the image is a fabrication -- a conclusion supported by an AI expert.
