Evidence for funerary behaviour and lethal trauma in a new Neanderthal individual from Shanidar Cave
Abstract Shanidar Cave has long featured in debates concerning Neanderthal cognitive capacity and behaviour, including evidence for care and intentional burial. By identifying additional individuals, including Shanidar A reported here, new excavations have expanded a burial cluster first identified in 1960. Shanidar A, an older adult, was deposited around 75,000 years ago, decayed, and their skeletal remains were subsequently disturbed by a flash flood.
Deep ancestry of Bornean hunter-gatherers supports long-term local ancestry dynamics
Highlights • Northeast Bornean Punan communities show strong genetic ancestry connections • These communities outgroup modern and ancient Austronesian genetic proxies • Results support long-term occupation of Borneo by Punan-related people • Results are also inconsistent with recent subsistence reversion among Punan peoples Summary Borneo was a crossroad of ancient dispersals, with some of the earliest Southeast Asian human remains and rock art.

Is farming the root of civilisation?
Humans discovered agriculture far earlier than previously thought; so why did they give up on it? This essay originally appeared in ‘Civilisation: Perspectives from the Engelsberg Seminar’, Bokförlaget Stolpe, in collaboration with Axel and Margaret Ax:son Johnson Foundation, 2013.

Recent Developments in C−H functionalisation of Benzofurans and Benzothiophenes
Abstract In this review, we summarise progress in benzofuran and benzothiophene C−H functionalisations over the past five years, including 1) alkylations, 2) arylations and heteroarylations, 3) carboxylations, carbamoylations and C‐heteroatom bond formations and 4) cyclisations. Abstract Benzofurans and benzothiophenes are important pharmaceutical motifs, appearing in a broad range of small molecule therapeutic classes.
A ‘long-fuse domestication’ of the horse? Tooth shape suggests explosive change in modern breeds compared with extinct populations and living Przewalski’s horses
Archaeological and molecular data suggest that horses were domesticated comparatively recently, the genetic evidence indicating that this was from several maternal haplotypes but only a single paternal one. However, although central to our understanding of how humans and environmental conditions shaped animals during domestication, the phenotypic changes associated with this idiosyncratic domestication process remain unclear.
