What was your first job as a journalist?
My first proper job was reporter on Sunday Business newspaper, with Tom Rubython, followed by Anil Bhoyrul, as editor.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes - when my age was still in single figures.
How is social media changing news?
Social media has drastically reduced the value of news, which is reflected in the quality of output.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Email is probably best, thank you.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
The usual ones.
What's your favorite social network?
They're all, increasingly, unenlightening time sinks.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
Didn't have a "high school"; didn't have a newspaper at any school I attended.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
News stories where I've seen a compelling angle that no-one else seems to have done.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Don't do it - the barrier to entry is low and the economic model is increasingly questionable.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Any time's fine, really.
What's your favorite drink?
Proper beer or tea, depending on the time of day.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
Like many people, these days, I tend to 'graze' media rather than sit down with a particular publication.
