But, while a few niche projects promise ultra high-speed travel, much of the industry is focused on keeping the world's increasingly urbanized population moving while simultaneously limiting the effects of climate change. And then there's the pandemic.

Free from the rigors of the daily commute, traveling by train is by far the most civilized way to get around and really get to know a new country. We all have our favorite journeys, whether it's conquering the Alps on a cogwheel railway or streaking across the rooftops of Tokyo on a futuristic Shinkansen "bullet train." And traveling by train is good for the planet, too.

Or is it? In this Guardian article, Department for Transport (DFT) claims to be supporting families with the cost of living, but Labour claims that: Only about 1% of all journeys taken are likely to benefit from the promotion, which is targeted at intercity travel at quiet times, meaning even fewer commuters will see any reduction in fares.
