1 Introduction Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies of subcortical/deep gray matter (GM) structures (e.g., globus pallidus, caudate nucleus, nucleus accumbens, putamen, thalamus, hippocampus, and amygdala) have primarily focused on their volume (measured on T1 scans) that show unique nonlinear cross-sectional trajectories over the healthy lifespan that increase until adolescence, peaking between ~15 and 25 years of age, and thereafter decrease with aging (e.g., [1-3].

Abstract Many studies have demonstrated unique trajectories of deep gray matter (GM) volumes over development and aging, suggesting but not measuring microstructural alterations over the lifespan. Only a few studies have measured diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) parameters in deep GM or reported these values across a wide age range in a large cohort.
