Trivia time! Where in the United States can you visit Soda City? If you answered Columbia, South Carolina, you’re right! This nickname apparently derives from an old practice of abbreviating Columbia as Cola. The locals then referred to the town as Soda City, and the bus system there is now also known as the Soda Cap Connector. We mention this because we’ll be appearing live in Columbia at the University of South Carolina on Thursday, May 15.

What was your first job as a journalist?

Reporter at The Maneater, the student newspaper of the University of Missouri in Columbia.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

I learned to type on an IBM Selectric typewriter and can still do 120 WPM.

How is social media changing news?

Instead of private Rolodexes, we now have public ones. It's easier to find people.
