When so many modest-scale crime films are made every year, most of them envisaged within a fairly narrow set of genre boundaries, it is critical to any individual work’s success to stand out from the crowd. The most effective methods of achieving this goal seem to be threefold: strong actors, effective dialogue, and genuinely surprising plot developments and elements. Thankfully Permanent Damage, a new Canadian feature directed by Seth A. Smith, manages to succeed on all three fronts.

Alcoholic loner Julian (Michael G. Kehoe) reunites with his estranged son Thomas (William Mann) when he takes him into an isolated forest to search for a missing boy. There are things Julian has not told his son, about the forest they have entered and the mysterious cult that lives within its borders. Shot on location in Kentucky, Valley of the Horntak is a new independent American horror film directed and co-written by Maxwell Morro.

REVIEW: Hoppers (2026)

The needle keeps moving back and forth on the quality of Pixar Animation Studios’ suite of animated features. While some releases of recent years – like Turning Red (2022) – proved exceptional, others have been perhaps less effective in capturing an audience’s affections. The legendary ‘can do no wrong’ run of 1995 to 2004, taking in two Toy Storys, Monsters Inc, and Finding Nemo, is well into the studio’s past these days.
