I worked the border. Here's what it takes to win | Opinion
Greg Cunningham Las Cruces Sun-News April 20, 2026, 3:05 a.m. MT My understanding of New Mexico's drug crisis did not merely come from a report or a briefing. I worked it from the inside as an undercover narcotics detective, as an officer commissioned by the DEA, and as a Marine who learned what a secure perimeter looks like and what it costs when it fails. Fentanyl is the leading cause of death for Americans ages 18 to 45. Not car accidents. Not cancer.
I worked the border: Here's what it takes to win

The SLIC Pin (Self-Locking Implanted Cotter Pin) from Pivot Point is a pin and cotter all in one. This one-piece locking clevis pin is cost saving, fast, and secure. It functions as a quick locking pin wherever you need a fast-lock function. It features a spring-loaded plunger that functions as an easy insertion ramp. This revolutionary fastening pin is very popular and used successfully in a wide range of applications. Learn more.
Nanofibers yield stronger, tougher carbon fiber composites
Researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) have developed an innovative new technique using carbon nanofibers to enhance binding in carbon fiber and other fiber-reinforced polymer composites—an advance likely to improve structural materials for automobiles, airplanes and other applications that require lightweight and strong materials.
Updated software improves slicing for large-format 3D printing
Researchers at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory have developed the first additive manufacturing slicing computer application to simultaneously speed and simplify digital conversion of accurate, large-format three-dimensional parts in a factory production setting. The technology, known as Slicer 2, can help widen the use of 3D printing for larger objects made from metallic and composite materials.
Spring Resolutions for Climate at CLF
Last year was not easy for New England. Just as we were closing out 2023, my home state of Maine endured a storm that hit us with heavy rainfall, high-speed winds, and intense flooding. More than 400,000 Central Maine Power customers lost power – and dozens were left shivering in the dark for days after the storm’s initial impact. Just in time to ring in 2024, we got hit with another storm with even more flooding. These storms are an alarming trend in Maine and New England.
What Do the New EPA Power Plant Standards Mean for New England?
For years, the federal government has been stymied on climate action. But over recent months, we have seen some promising moves by the Biden administration. One of these moves includes the Inflation Reduction Act, which may generate hundreds of billions of dollars of investments in clean energy. Now, EPA has proposed new federal standards that are designed to slash carbon pollution from new and existing power plants.
Drift phase resolved diffusive radiation belt model: 2. implementation in a case of random electric potential fluctuations

Here, we implement these general considerations in a special case.

By GREG CUNNINGHAM Los Alamos My wife, Andrea, and I celebrated our 30th year in Los Alamos last summer. We both love our adopted town, but when we first moved here in 1992 we were dismayed by the antiquated infrastructure for public facilities, local businesses and housing.
Why Are New England Electricity Prices Increasing This Winter?
Maine received our first snowfall of the season a few weeks ago. As I woke up on that Monday morning, I was greeted by flurries outside my window and the gentle rumble of my heat pump warming my home. Having lived in New England my entire life, I know our winters are no joke – and neither are the utility bills that come with them. I’m lucky that my electric heat pump helps my family save money on heating costs. But even with those savings, we’re still feeling this season’s electricity price spikes.
Why Is ISO-New England Helping Big Oil Lie to You?
While we all turn up the heat during New England's classic frigid winter, ISO-New England warns of mythical rolling energy blackouts that have never happened in the region. Photo: Shutterstock. CLF has long called out bad actors whose actions (or inactions) harm our communities and environment. ISO-New England, our regional electricity grid and markets manager, shouldn’t be one of them. However, the harm ISO inflicts runs even deeper and often manifests in subtle ways.
Management of common spinal complaints
Spinal pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal problems managed in primary care as one in six people have back problems (ABS data). Around 3% of all GP appointments are for the management of this issue increasing to approximately one in three males or one in four females aged 55 to 64.

Multidisciplinary approach improving spinal outcomes
Advances in spinal surgical technology with changing population demographics has led to an increasing rate of spinal surgeries of approximately 5% every year. This acceleration necessitates advancement in pre- and post-operative care. Dr Greg Cunningham & Dr Paul Taylor, Spine Surgeons Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols were first reported in the 1990s, pioneered post-operatively following colorectal surgery. Publications on care improvement now span surgical disciplines.
Minimally invasive spine surgery
The principal goals of minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS) are to reduce surgical morbidity and recovery period of surgery. For most procedures, this comes down to two discrete elements.

Steady as she goes: Scientists tame damaging plasma instabilities and pave the way for efficient fusion on Earth Before scientists can capture and recreate the fusion process that powers the sun and stars to produce virtually limitless energy on Earth, they must first learn to control the hot plasma gas that fuels fusion reactions.
CLF denies financial ties to TDI - CommonWealth Magazine
January 22 column (“ Money is clouding CLF’s judgment ”) is an utter fabrication and represents yet another attempt by Northern Pass advocates to spread misinformation that they hope will advantage an unpopular project. The bottom line is this: CLF has never had any financial relationship with TDI – the developers of the New England Clean Power Link transmission project – and would receive zero financial gain from the project or its proposed benefits package.
More pipelines aren't the answer - CommonWealth Magazine
NEW ENGLAND IS in the clutches of a frigid winter. This is putting demands on our energy resources and driving up electricity prices during the few hours of the day when consumer electricity use is highest. Concerns over these temporary price spikes are warranted, particularly given their impacts on our most vulnerable.

Letter To The Editor: Let's Support The Amenities That Make Our Community Better For Everyone!
As Recreation Bond ballots are due tomorrow, we want to remind everyone to get their ballots in and encourage you to vote “Yes” on the bond. Those opposed to the bond seem to have two main arguments against it: We feel that both arguments are incorrect as we look to the future of our community.
