Whether or not you need an introduction to Masashi Hamauzu’s music, we’ve got something for you. From some well-known to lesser-known Final Fantasy pieces to some classic Square Enix games, our panel dug in to ensure we covered a lot of ground in Hamauzu’s history as a composer and arranger.
Top 25 RPG Dragons
As many of you know, it’s the Year of the Dragon on the Chinese calendar, so we thought it was time to put together a feature on our favorite dragons! After all, what’s a good RPG without at least one excellent dragon? While we had a tough time deciding on the final number, we decided to stick with 25.
Random Encounter 294 - Crawl Out Through the Fallout, Baby
Article / Highlight · Podcast · Random Encounter by and on April 15, 2024 On this episode, ex-Random Encounter host Greg Delmage returns to share his film expertise while chatting about the new Fallout TV show! Video game adaptations are hot right now, and Amazon has just dropped what might be the best one yet: Fallout! Based on the long-running RPG series, Fallout, the show is an exploration of the far future after a nuclear war in the 21st century destroyed all of civilization.
Crest of Flames Music Review | RPGFan
Fire Emblem’s legacy is long but relatively new to audiences in North America. That exposure is largely due to Super Smash Bros. Melee showcasing some of the series’ heroes and some of the stellar soundtracks. Moving ahead to more recent entries, 2019’s Fire Emblem: Three Houses featured new pieces from series composer Takeru Kanazaki.
MILK BAR: An EDM Tribute to Majora's Mask Music Review
The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask offers incredible source material for musicians to play with, and gosh, have they over the years. Koji Kondo’s work on this poignant entry in the series continues to evoke feelings of joy, pain, mystery, triumph, and more to this day. So it’s no shock that MILK BAR: An EDM Tribute to Majora’s Mask is a solid listen, especially coming from the pedigree of GameGrooves.
Rhythm Encounter 123 - The Secret Trials of Hiroki Kikuta
It’s time for another composer spotlight on Rhythm Encounter, and this time we’re celebrating the works of Hiroki Kikuta. Many RPG fans know his work on the Mana series — particularly Secret of Mana and Trials of Mana — but there’s much more to Kikuta than many people know. From a PSone game that never left Japan to his contributions to many indie games today, today’s episode digs into the many hats Hiroki Kikuta has worn over the years.
Rhythm Encounter 120 - Party in the GBA
From 2001 to 2005, the Game Boy Advance was Nintendo’s golden son. The Game Boy Advance brought gameplay depth and audio quality yet-unseen in a handheld gaming device, and gave us dozens of superb RPGs to enjoy over its run of success. Today, we celebrate the indigo blue machine with nine fabulous songs from a few of the GBA’s finest RPGs. Featuring: Michael Sollosi, Greg Delmage, Patrick Gann, Peter Triezenberg; Edited by Jono Logan Part 1 – When something’s going wrong, you must shrink it.
Final Fantasy Series Acoustic Arrangements
You don’t see “resplendent” used as a descriptor often enough, but after listening to Final Fantasy Series Acoustic Arrangements, I can think of few other words to describe the experience. Gathering together some lovely and memorable pieces that are franchise powerhouses, veteran violinist and lead on the Acoustic Arrangements series Atsuki Yoshida has compiled an outstanding album.
Seiken Densetsu 3 25th Anniversary Orchestra Concert CD
Following the 2019 release of Collection of Mana, which brought 1995’s Seiken Densetsu 3 to Western shores for the first time under the name Trials of Mana, Square Enix also fully remade the classic RPG in 2020. As if that wasn’t enough for series fans, a concert was broadcast online in June 2021, celebrating the game and its incredible music for its 25th anniversary.
ALPHA Music Review | RPGFan
Alpha is this bizarre piece of Square history where “if you know, you know” applies. Originally released in 1986, it’s a text-based sci-fi adventure game set in the far future of 2101 A.D. It envisions humanity’s future amongst the stars, heading for a fabled new home world of “Alpha.” Never released outside of Japan, there’s a reason few people worldwide know about this strange title.

Rhythm Encounter 105 - Chained Echoes with Composer Eddie Marianukroh
There is nothing quite as exciting as having a composer as a guest on Rhythm Encounter. After offering much praise for Chained Echoes and its soundtrack, we wanted to get to know up-and-comer Eddie Marianukroh, the composer of said game. In today’s episode of Rhythm Encounter, we talk to Eddie regarding his work as a composer, and ask him to share some game music that matters to him.
Chained Echoes Review
Indie JRPG Chained Echoes brings together classic touchstone inspirations of the genre while creating an incredible, well-crafted original experience. Attempting to harness the nostalgia of past generations to craft a gaming experience that feels familiar yet new is a monumental task. Many developers have tried in recent years but few so rarely stack up.
Potion Permit Review | RPGFan
The sim genre has seen more and more entries from indie and AAA developers in recent years. It’s almost like people want to experience what it’s like to actually afford a homestead and devote time to developing it. Whatever the reason, fans have their pick in terms of look, theme, and pedigree. Potion Permit seems like your everyday sim but goes its own way. While the concept is novel, the game could wear out its welcome for some. MassHive Media has created a complex, exciting, and interwoven world.
Ooblets Review | RPGFan
Hold on to your pompadoots because, after six years of loving labor, Glumberland is fully releasing Ooblets. This charming indie gem has been in early development as devs steadily worked to introduce new areas and gameplay options as they neared 1.0. Now that it’s live, folks are free to leave Aroh Island and explore mainland Oob, for better or worse. So, what’s an ooblet, you ask? They’re goofy little sentient (though apparently daft) plant creatures that inhabit most of Oob.
Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster Original Soundtrack
Final Fantasy VIΒ (FFVI) has become a nigh game of legend in the RPG community. Longtime, die-hard fans who have loved the franchise since its origins often tout the sixth entry as the series’s peak. Whether you agree or disagree, the fact remains that the game is incredible and iconic. Big names like Sakaguchi, Kitase, Ito, Nomura, Amano, and of course, Uematsu were backing its production.
Arietta of Spirits
Grief, no matter how great or small, is an unfortunate, necessary part of life – defy anyone who would tell you otherwise. Third Spirit Games centers Arietta of Spirits around this fact, and that the only way to move past grief is to face it and deal with it. They share their message with a faithful Zelda-like full of challenge, beauty, and heart, and leave players with a memorable, if brief, experience.

Chocobo GP | RPGFan
What a fine day for a race…until you hear that phrase repeatedly. Despite that, any day with Chocobo GP will still make for fine racing. Final Fantasy fans haven’t heard much about racing since the original‘s release in 1999 (aside from the potential 3DS entry S-E, later canceled), likely built to compete in the potential-filled market created by Mario Kart 64. Building on the bones of Square Enix’s one-time racer, the new entry boasts some welcome improvements but remains “fine” at the moment.
