Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Writing Japan-based travel and culture stories

Why did you become a journalist?

To inspire and to share my joy and sense of wonder. Sometimes, to motivate people to take action to make a better world.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Anytime is perfect.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

Cathay Pacific's In-flight magazine editor asked me to write about ski resorts in Honshu, Japan. I got to revisit winter wonderlands.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

If I am not in a hot spring, I am exploring the mountains and fields of Japan. I might also be involved in volunteer work.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

The New Yorker or Outdoor Magazine.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

The Japanese people all love and respect nature.
