One constant, however, is that of combining delicious tea with tranquility. Tea ceremonies became significant in Japanese culture over a thousand years ago. Today, many practitioners are adapting the ancient ceremony to reflect social changes.

Japanese dragons, unlike Western ones, don’t breathe fire and hoard gold. In Japan, dragons are concerned with water quality, rain, drought, spirituality and purity. Folktales and oral traditions suggest that ryū (dragons) live in caves or underwater.

Authentic Japanese tea ceremonies, rooted in centuries of tradition, provide revitalizing moments of quiet contemplation over simple objects and pleasures. They provide a respite from the constant distractions of phones, the cacophony of traffic, and other stressors in today’s hyperconnected world. A recent English-language tea ceremony at the Sanshotei Tea House drew bilingual native Japanese and foreign tea enthusiasts. The Tea House is situated within Yokiso Garden in Nagoya, Japan.
