Life on the Seas of Death
These days can pass miserable and empty. We need satisfaction; we need it early, and we find it, if we find it, in his steadfast love. No matter what our days contain, if they are contained within his love, we can be glad all our days. So many turn their vessel toward what they think will make them happy. But here Moses makes clear what will make man happy: God. And he pleads with God to satisfy them for as many days as he has afflicted them.
Life on the Seas of Death
Life on the Seas of Death Secular man may learn how to survive, but he does not know how to live. Because he knows not why he lives. In his sin, he gropes in the dark for meaning. He knows he can wreck any day now. He knows he will eventually hit the bottom. A forced sailor, he is born into this wild and raging sea of life he does not understand. He shudders to sink. He strives to stay aloft as long as possible. Yet he is moving, dragged toward somewhere — but where?
Chiefs' latest one-score win feels nothing like the lucky wins of the past
Two years ago, the Kansas City Chiefs were on a special kind of winning streak. In 2024, they went 11-0 in games decided by one score on their way to the Super Bowl. By the time the streak was finally broken last year, they had gone a record-setting 17-0 in one-score games. And then the wheels fell off . Whatever luck, or magic, or whatever they seemed to have had the entire previous year ran out.
Chiefs' latest one-score win feels nothing like the lucky wins of the past
The Chiefs' overtime victory over the Colts felt far more sustainable than the close escapes of previous seasons. ByGreg Morse|Sep 23, 2026, 8:39 PM EDT Sep 20, 2026; Kansas City, Missouri, USA; Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce (87) celebrates after scoring a touchdown against the Indianapolis Colts during the first quarter at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.
Harrison Butker just keeps delivering when the Chiefs need him most
Another week, another Harrison Butker clutch field goal. I saw it, you saw it, we all saw it. In the final second of overtime, the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Indianapolis Colts with a 40-yard field goal from Butker's golden foot. In case you didn't know, Butker has now gone 13-of-13 on kicks when the Chiefs were either trailing or tied with less than two minutes to go in the game (or in OT).
Preach Sermons, Not Commentaries
Preach Sermons, Not Commentaries The heart of man is a fortress without a drawbridge. It is so hard and impregnable that it takes divine weapons and skilled soldiers to regularly invade it with the truth. Weekly, men equipped by the Spirit of God urge the dead to live and the sorely tempted to flee to Christ, to cling to Christ, firing God’s very words at their souls to save them. Men are dying; the saints are tempted and weary; has God spoken or not?
Thou Shalt Not Hide from Neighbors
The time for your mission has arrived. Trash bag in hand, you set poised to maneuver through a backyard strewn with little toy landmines, make it to the trash can in the alleyway, and return unscathed. One last step before you go: a quick glance outside to see who is back there. Maybe you live in the suburbs and only see squirrels, but imagine houses so close that you can look out your window and into the eyes of your neighbors.
Confess and Forsake
Our first parents lost their game of hide-and-go-seek with the Lord after they sinned. They ate, hid from God, and covered themselves with fig leaves. It took one stroll through the garden for the Lord to discover, question, clothe, and expel them. They didn’t get away with it. If we need any further proof that we all descend from this couple, here we find the uncanny resemblance with how we deal with our sin. We children of Adam love to hide and cover.
The Demons Who Devour Babies
They served their idols, which became a snare to them. They sacrificed their sons and their daughters to the demons; they poured out innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan, and the land was polluted with blood. (Psalm 106:36–38) They sacrificed their sons and their daughters to the demons. (Psalm 106:37) I’ve wondered if demons ever appear as bees. At night, my children sometimes come to me complaining that the bees are after them.
Patrick Mahomes has every reason to believe his best years are still ahead
All books have chapters, and all chapters must come to an end. In Kansas City Chiefs lore, the Book of Patrick Mahomes closed its first chapter on December 14, 2025. The page was already beginning to turn as the worst season in over a decade slowly materialized. When Mahomes tore his ACL, and the Chiefs were eliminated from playoff contention just a few minutes later, it was a wrap. Nine straight AFC West titles, five Super Bowl appearances, and three Lombardis. Not bad for a chapter.
‘The Odyssey’ and the End of the World
This article contains spoilers, about the end of the movie and about the end of time. The first may ruin your surprise; the latter may save your soul. The following is not a movie review or retelling of the epic, but rather an exploration of how the climactic scene of Homer’s epic tale anticipates the surprising end of all history in the real-life return of Christ. What resonates in one epic will actually come to pass in the other.
Are You Tempted to Leave Jesus?
Are You Tempted to Leave Jesus? Do you ever regret that God saved you? Israel did. They spent generations crying out to God for liberation. Then they finally heard God command Pharaoh to let his people go and watched as he sent ten plagues of persuasion. In jubilee, they traveled through the Red Sea to Mount Sinai, where they covenanted themselves to their Redeemer. Here we expect the happily-ever-after to begin.
Pornography and the War for the World
It was a pitiful way to die. Imagining the scene makes the reader, especially the male reader, uncomfortable. The timing was deviously calculated and thoroughly dishonest. The plan worked. Oh, how heartless the sons of Jacob were to cripple and disarm the foe before destroying them. It only took two, inflamed with vengeance, to kill all the men of the city as they flailed and gimped about in vain. I imagine the victims wondering — How could the enemy attack like this? Have these men no shame?
Faith Never Prays, ‘If You Can’
Faith Never Prays, ‘If You Can’ It was a father’s nightmare — a nightmare that followed him into the daylight. How many years was he made to watch this? How many years had he offered his prayers? How many years had his son battled this demon? He felt what no father witnessing a suffering child can bear to feel: helpless. How quickly did he set off with his son when the glorious stories first reached his ears? Even this Nazarene’s disciples possess power to exorcise demons?
Sin Will Find You Out
I know of a Christian leader who was well respected by those close to him. He was bright, gifted, seemingly a man for young men to follow. But he had a secret. And secrets, like wildfires, are hard to control. A participant in his sin told a relative. That relative told it to my relative. He was living a double life. His was an ongoing kind of sin, a big-deal kind of sin, a career-ending kind of sin, a hell-threatening kind of sin. Hearing it, I went from disbelief to sadness to anger to fear.
Knicks' historic Finals comeback brought Chiefs fans right back to 2019
We'll take any excuse to go back and watch Jet Chip Wasp clips again. When Friends Fail and the Earth Gives Way
Dark. Inhospitable. Damp. Shadows full of questions; silence full of sadness. The body shivers. Alone. Enemies close. Friends far. Manacled within midnight at midday. David, miles from the throne, sits in a cave. He retraces his descent. How had it come to this? God promised him so much, delivered so much — exalted him high enough to cut off a giant’s head. He had won the hearts of the nation, the prince, and the king’s daughter. Even Saul, for a time, loved him. Now he sits alone in a cave.
Tomorrow May Be Too Late
“I just never got around to it.” This must be one of the worst thoughts of those tormented in hell who heard the gospel in life. They passed through church doors a few times. Maybe they even admitted they were sinners. They were open to being saved — really, they were — and even planned on getting around to it. They did wish to escape the sinner’s fate and be numbered among the great seashore of the blessed; they just never got around to it.
Artificial Preaching: The Temptation of AI
From the beginning of time, the God of heaven and earth has declared war on all wisdom that ignores his own. He will tolerate no rivals when it comes to our trust. That’s what makes artificial intelligence such a danger to the Christian, and especially to the minister. We need to be reminded that God’s wisdom is not the wisdom of a supercomputer. We need fresh conviction that God’s presence must do God’s work.
This Little Light of Mine
This Little Light of Mine I awoke in a dark wood. Spirits darted in the shadows, and death made easy prey of men. How would anyone find the narrow path of safety in such an unbelieving world? Man, woman, and child stepped over the slain into the grave, one after another. The Wood was named Without Hope and Without God. I heard the sighs, groans, and sobs of the Already Condemned. They moaned, We hope for light, and behold, darkness, and for brightness, but we walk in gloom.
Tyreek Hill reunion would give Chiefs wide receiver room real juice again
I'll admit it: I want Tyreek Hill back. Even if he's got a bionic leg and is a half-second slower than he used to be, I'll still take him. Even if he isn't who he was when he won Super Bowl LIV with the Kansas City Chiefs, I'll still take him. Why? Because Hill a bona fide Hall of FamerTyreek Hill reunion with Chiefs could fix what’s quietly been broken who can serve a twofold purpose for a team that is now rebuilding-ish.
The Trial of Daily Bread
I remember learning in grade school that refrigerators were from the devil. My teacher, very doubtfully a believer in Satan, at least assured us of the refrigerator’s nefariousness. Men were takers, you see — from Mother Earth and from the animal kingdom. These little boxes, opening their doors as angels of light, allowed greedy man to preserve his selfish spoils unspoiled. He could take and take and take without consequence for his hoarding.
The Voice of “A Great Awakening”
Policy-making may be useful for cleaning the outside of the cup, but the problem is the inside, the spiritual. We need godly politicians, but we need real preachers far more. Our world is prone to spiritual slumber. It always has been, and until that trumpet blast at Christ’s return, it sadly shall be. But God does not leave himself without witnesses. In each generation, God raises up loud voices to awaken souls.
Lead at a Pace They Can Follow
So, young man, you’re sick of the passivity that plagues our time. You’re tired of being a spiritual nothing in your household, parroting the same stale prayers before meals, unable to speak intelligibly of your faith or lead your family toward heaven. You’re done being an un-man: un-serious, un-helpful, un-faithful. You are now awake to your purpose as head of the family. You groan over lost opportunities and resolve, “No more.” You determine to begin at once — hallelujah.
No Sin Is Worth Hell
All the plenty will be forgotten. (Genesis 41:30) Pharaoh looked out from the bank of the river. What were those coming up out of the Nile? Seven healthy cows emerged from the waters and walked upon the land. Who has ever seen cows emerge from the depths of a mighty river? A strange sight indeed. But more came; he shivered. Seven sickly cows staggered from the waters to stand on the shore. Seven plump cows; seven bony cows. Even for dreams, this was odd. But bizarre soon turned nightmarish.
The Voice of ‘A Great Awakening’
The Voice of ‘A Great Awakening’ Our world is prone to spiritual slumber. It always has been, and until that trumpet blast at Christ’s return, it sadly shall be. But God does not leave himself without witnesses. In each generation, God raises up loud voices to awaken souls. One of the loudest to ever quake a generation was that of the Reverend George Whitefield (1714–1770).
He Came, He Died, He Conquered
He Came, He Died, He Conquered Many eyes saw a man being crucified. Some saw a criminal. Others, a blasphemer. Few, a king. All saw blood and torment, torture and death — slow and horrible. Eyes huddled around the horror; man mocked the one who came to save him. If you were there to survey the wondrous cross, what would your eyes have seen? Barbarity, agony, defeat.
‘Jacob I Loved’: The Heart Behind Election
An oil painting hangs in my dining room of a shepherd looking after his sheep outside a great city. It reminds me of my life’s charge from my Lord. Anyone who walks into that room sees it. Recently, I asked two of those who often have seen it to describe the painting hanging behind them — without taking a cheating glance. Both squinted, pupils darting to and fro, trying to recall what they had seen, or at least glanced at, countless times. Familiarity had robbed them of seeing what they looked at.
Faithful Churches Can Rescue Cities
Faithful Churches Can Rescue Cities Heroes have inhabited cities throughout time, even ones that fell. They played their part; they defied evil; they counted the cost; they provided an alternative to what became. Solomon saw such a man. He viewed him as a lion among goats, a king among commoners. He saved his city. In Solomon’s mind, this man’s name became synonymous with wisdom itself. He sketches his heroics: I have also seen this example of wisdom under the sun, and it seemed great to me.
Sketch Beauty in Suffering
Sketch Beauty in Suffering A man loses a great sum of money in one day. His stocks plummet. He loses millions. A woman finds out about the rich man’s downfall. She stares at him across the crowded room. How will he react? She needs to know. When he leaves, she follows him at a distance. What will he do next? He stops at a local bar, orders a drink, hardly touches it. He walks on, stops at a café, orders a mineral water. He barely takes a sip. Instead, he grabs a pen and begins writing upon the receipt.
Chiefs must decide if Noah Gray still fits their future
A long, long time ago, I wrote about the improbability of the Kansas City Chiefs drafting two of the greatest tight ends ever. At the end of that story, I asked a provocative question: could recently drafted Noah Gray be next? I know, I know, you can laugh at me and roast me in the comments all you want. I was young, naive, and hopeful. But to Gray's credit, he's still on the Chiefs roster five years later.
He Defends Our Meekness with Might
Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. (Matthew 5:5) How can a man be meek in an evil world? Must he look upon injustice idly — or, worse, indifferently? How can he be gentle among the cruel, restrained among the ruthless? How can he live amongst wolves without becoming one? Whom does Jesus teach will “inherit the earth”? Evil times befall the world when men misunderstand meekness.
A Shy Guy’s Guide to Big Groups
“Sorry I am late; I didn’t want to come.” I laughed. Then sighed. Here was one of my inner man’s favorite shirts. Do you dislike big group gatherings? Do they glare at you from the calendar? Would you rather read a book or serve on jury duty or sprain an ankle than — as the little mermaid sang — be where the people are? It’s not their fault; you’re just not good at tons of people. You can take them one at a time, but you’re not Samson.
When God Denies Good Desires
When God Denies Good Desires When you discovered that Jesus is worth everything, you surrendered all. You became his blank check. You would go anywhere and do anything to bring him glory. You began to dream holy dreams. You glimpsed yourself serving, preaching, leading, going. The dream inhabited your soul. You waited and kept waiting. You sat in the lowest seat, expecting to be called to a higher one. He didn’t need you — you knew that — but still you kept yourself ready, just in case.
Before You Rule, Rule Yourself
Young man, how would you live if you were next in line to rule a kingdom? If you knew a day were coming when your decisions would bless or doom your people, how might you spend your time now? Would you speak differently, live differently, choose different friends? Would you be more serious, more watchful, more prayerful? Where more is given, more is always required. For the man of God, this is no thought experiment. He is a prophet, king, and priest in his own household.
Chiefs fans turning on Andy Reid after one year forgot the decade before
After a down year, should the Kansas City Chiefs consider moving on from head coach Andy Reid? I’ll give you the short answer: "No". The longer answer is, "No, but I guess we’ll entertain the idea." NFL fans are fickle. It’s a win-now league, and if your team isn’t winning now, the torches and pitchforks come out. Never mind if your team has won nine straight division titles. Never mind if they’ve been to five of the last six Super Bowls, including three in a row.
He Dawns as Prince of Peace
He Dawns as Prince of Peace This article is part of our Advent series “The Dawning of the King.” We have also created a PDF with hymns and daily Scripture readings to use as a guide, whether individually or with your family or small group. To us a child is born, to us a son is given . . . and his name shall be called . . . Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6) The human heart longs for a joy it cannot locate, a rest it cannot find, a blessing it cannot grasp.
You May Not See the Fruit of Your Ministry
You May Not See the Fruit of Your Ministry I am not often tempted to grumble over a man being saved, but on this occasion, I mumbled to myself, Are you serious? Spurgeon was testing the acoustics at the grand Surrey Gardens, where he was set to preach the following day. He bellowed in what he thought was an empty room, “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world!” A workman, looking up perplexed, was eventually saved by the utterance.
Where the Wild Things Are
Where there are no oxen, the manger is clean, but abundant crops come by the strength of the ox. (Proverbs 14:4) Believe it or not, this text teaches us about parenting. It’s about the household. Specifically, it can volunteer as a life verse for some mothers with young children. The more vivacious and colorful your children’s personalities or the more allergic to tidiness and sedentary play, the timelier this verse comes to your soul.
What If I Don’t Enjoy the Christian Life? A Letter to Young Men
Dear Caleb, You’ve recently shared your frustrations about the Christian life. It is difficult; “somewhat miserable,” you say. You begin to see more victory over sexual sin, but the heart of the matter remains — you still don’t enjoy this new life in Christ like you expected. You confess, “I think I was happier before I became a Christian.” You are right to be watchful of your heart and to notice how sluggish it is to delight in the Lord.
Preach the Bad News Too: A Surprising Lesson from Spurgeon’s Converts
Thirty large volumes: That’s how many pages it took to contain the testimonies of those applying for membership during the ministry of Charles Spurgeon. Fifteen thousand handwritten entries in all — over 70 percent of which were from new converts.
From Sinners to Sons: How God Welcomes the Lost
This man receives sinners and eats with them. (Luke 15:2) The Pharisees and the scribes were rather grumbly about the characters Jesus chose to eat with. If he had chosen to eat exclusively with upstanding people such as themselves, they might have praised him.
Chiefs fans still hate that Mariota moment but maybe they shouldn’t Original
I remember the night. It was a cold January game at Arrowhead Stadium. My family had gone to watch the Chiefs (hopefully) win their first home playoff game in what felt like forever. They were playing the Tennessee Titans. Alex Smith was the quarterback, and the Kansas City Chiefs were division winners with an okay 10–6 record. The game kicked off, and it was awesome. The Chiefs sailed to a 21–3 halftime lead. It was finally here: the first home playoff win in my living memory.
Rashee Rice is back for Chiefs but this offense already found its rhythm
It's Rice time. After six long weeks, the suspension of Kansas City Chiefs' wide receiver Rashee Rice is finally over. As the team heads into a Week 7 matchup against the rival Raiders, they are excited to get back one of their star playmakers. Just how much have the Chiefs missed Rice? Well, let's do a recap, set to the tune of Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone." The first two weeks of the 2025 season were one of the most putrid offensive stretches of the Patrick Mahomes era.
The Lord Is My Shepherd: Why God Made Sheep
God filled his world with props — with trees and eagles and mountains and fish and men — to reveal not just his creativity and power, but himself. One of the most bewildering parables he conceived (before hills ever held them) is that of the shepherd and his sheep. Consider sheep — the most mentioned animal in the Bible. What are their virtues? Their fur is warm in the winter, and they are tasty in a gyro — but they have little more to show for themselves.
When We Must Walk Alone
It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes. (Psalm 118:8–9) You did not choose solitude. You never thought you’d have so few friends by your side — especially now. In your moment of need, you’re left only questions. Trials fill the skies with arrows — you’re deserted in the dark. Where did they go? This friendless path is well-worn. Many of the faithful have traveled it before. Moses into the wilderness.
Preachers, Perfect Your Voice
Pastors, many of you have spent years in training, decades studying the Bible, the original languages, and books of theology, countless hours on your knees in prayer and in your people’s homes. But how much time have you given to that instrument that brings forth our learning, our affection, our glimpses of glory, God’s very words, and in a sense our very selves? How much have we considered our voices?
When Death Draws Near
To commemorate the republication of John Piper’s book Desiring God, we are releasing eight articles under the theme “Desiring God in the Dark.” Find the full series on the theme page. “To be or not to be — that is the question.” Shakespeare’s famous line gives voice to despairing hearts. Hamlet asks himself, Why face life’s bruises and beatings when one could bypass them all in death? “To die, to sleep — no more . . .” (Hamlet, 3.1.64, 68–69).
Chiefs WR chaos has some fans dreaming of unrealistic Tyreek Hill reunion Original
Friday night in Brazil didn't go the way the Kansas City Chiefs and their fans had hoped. Losing only the second season-opening game of Patrick Mahomes' career was painful enough, but losing Xavier Worthy might have been even more painful. It feels like the football gods are just mocking the Chiefs at this point when it comes to wide receivers. Worthy, primed to be the top receiver in the absence of Rashee Rice, was promptly hurt just three plays into the game.
Holy Ambition Doesn’t Hurry
Two soldiers meet three witches on the battlefield after their victory. Macbeth and Banquo greet the bearded ladies with amusement until the witches address Macbeth as if he were a king: “Hail!” They claim to disclose time’s secret: Macbeth shall be first Lord of Cawdor and, one day, king. Banquo, his nobler friend, shall not be king, they are told, but his sons will. So their names shall both rise to royalty.
