Tradition continues with a healthy debate
On the same day as the statewide election, November 4, Amador High School conducted its annual Mock Election, a program designed so that every senior can become a more educated voter and register to vote, should they not have done so previously. Amador County already boasts one of the highest voting percentages in California and each year Amador High’s 17- and 18-year-old students can graduate knowing they have improved that number.
Letter to the Editor: Disregard by McClintock
Our representative, Congressman McClintock, has previously said: “Unsustainable government spending drives both taxes and debt.” “Taxes and debt are two sides of the same coin.” “A sovereign debt crisis is coming and at our current rate of spending and borrowing, it could be coming very soon.” Regrettably, Congressman McClintock just disregarded his duty to protect his constituents and voted to add more than $3 trillion to the debt, which is already nearing 36 trillion.
Letter to the Editor: Make classrooms safer
There are a few truisms in the educational world and unfortunately the Amador County Unified School District is in the process of disregarding two of the most fundamental ideas. Truism 1: A healthy and functional student-teacher ratio is vital to an engaging classroom. Truism 2: A safe classroom is necessary for the students to openly and authentically learn. When a student walks into a room and there are not enough desks, the environment will be an obstacle to learning.
Amador High aims for real results from ‘Mock Election’
Amador High School conducted its annual Mock Election on November 7 and 8 with the incredible backdrop of the 2024 election. In many ways, this event stood in stark contrast to the rancor, partisanship and overall tone with much of the national election. Amador’s AP U.S. Government class rose to the challenge this year to present a shortened campaign for five political parties and one political organization of their choice to their peers with the ultimate goal of registering every senior to vote.
Perbal provides a riveting program for local students
On Wednesday, May 29 the Amador High School World History classes welcomed Ms. Irene Perbal to speak on the subject of the Holocaust. She is a dynamic presenter that detailed her experiences living under Nazi occupation in her home country of the Netherlands. The harrowing accounts of hiding Jewish people in the attic, getting discovered, and surviving countless assaults kept all riveted.
Amador High students get a valuable lesson in the democratic process
On November 6 and 7, 2023, the senior class at Amador High School completed a mock election and debate at the Giles Turner Performing Arts Center on campus. The stage was filled with seven students representing a range of political parties so that the upcoming graduates have the necessary education to register to vote and to select a party that is representational of their values. Ms. Thomas, once again, had prepared all of her students with a unit of elections and political parties.
Amador High School’s annual ‘mock’ election helps educate future voters
Outside of Amador High School, the political environment has swirled with distressing partisanship and negative campaigning for the midterm elections. Inside of Amador High School, the senior class completed this year’s version of a mock election with aplomb. Each new year brings its own personalities and viewpoints so this effort resulted in eight different political parties vying for a student’s opinion.
Sammy Mueller Brings 'Warrior' Mentality to Northwestern
Sammy Mueller Brings 'Warrior' Mentality to Northwestern Tue Aug 25 2020 | Kenny DeJohn | College In four years at Virginia, Mueller scored 165 goals with 50 assists, corralled 171 ground balls, caused 84 turnovers and secured 204 draws. And that’s not to diminish Mueller’s four standout years at Virginia.
South Kitsap decision puts student and teachers at risk
The South Kitsap School Board's decision to reopen in-person school is disgraceful. The primary duty of the school district is to provide for the safety of students and staff. This decision disregards our governor's recommendation and the recommendation of our Health District. Mrs. Diehl is correct that there is a substantial liability exposure presented by this decision. Employees are usually not permitted to sue their employers, but there is an exception for intentional injury.

Team USA's Blaze Riorden: Uncaged
Blaze Riorden’s father, Mike, got his son involved in lacrosse at age 4. He started as an attackman and within a couple years, he had a shot that struck fear into goalies around Fairport Youth Lacrosse (N.Y.). That fear extended to his teammates. At one practice, Riorden fired off a shot that caught his own goalie — breaking his hand in the process. Next man up? “My dad was the coach, and he said since I hurt him, I had to play goalie,” Blaze Riorden joked.

Way-Early 2019 Rankings: No. 5-1 (Division II Men)
Often times with the Way-Early rankings, the reigning champion finds itself at the top. It’s a bit of a “what have you done lately” philosophy, but it’s not entirely inaccurate when it comes to the world of Division II men’s lacrosse. In the past decade alone, we’ve had three different teams (C.W. Post, Limestone, Merrimack) repeat as Division II champions.

But the page has already turned to next spring, as players return to the workout grind and wall ball, while coaches hit the recruiting and ID camp circuit. There’s a brief period for rest and recovery, but the foundation for success in 2020 is already forming as the D-III level of play increases across the country.
