Rammellzee and Enfys Nest: The Gothic Futurism of Star Wars
I saw Solo: A Star Wars Story (NOTE: one plot spoiler below) the first weekend it opened with a friend, Rich Seymour. Leaving the theater, Rich mentioned how the costume for Enfys Nest resembled work by the late artist Ramellezee. We both checked our phones to see if anyone else made the connection.

Republican health plan to repeal Obamacare losing GOP support
The Republican-sponsored proposal to repeal and replace portions of Obamacare is under fire from conservative and moderate Republicans, and a McClatchy analysis of statements from House Republicans over the past 10 days shows there’s enough opposition to cause the bill to fail.

Highlights from #cj2014 opening keynote: Jon Kleinberg
2014 C+J Symposium We live in a society that is increasingly dependent on data and computation, a dependence that often evolves invisibly, without substantial critical assessment or accountability. Far from virtual, inert quantities, data and computation exert real forces in the physical world, shaping and defining systems of power that will play larger and larger roles in people’s lives.
Writing in Public and Syncing with GitHub
For a while now, I've admired my friend Ben Balter for writing out in the open. His blog is built on GitHub Pages, which means that for every piece on his blog, you can see each draft and revision along the way. As importantly, Ben takes advantage of GitHub to truly embrace collaboration — whether that's detailed debate on a complex topic as he works through issues, or just graciously fielding my constant typo fixes. The end product is better for it, and everyone feels engaged and invested.

Those entries have since been corrected. Faces of the Fallen is a collection of information about each U.S. service member who has died as a result of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation New Dawn and Operation Enduring Freedom.

BCNI Philly: GitHub for news
Greg Linch led a 3 pm session in room 4 on applying GitHub (and Git) to news. Andrew Spittle and I collaborated on live Google Doc notes. Here’s Greg’s previous blog post on the topic. GitHub is a social coding site. You can host your code in a repository, fork others’ code, merge others’ code back into yours, and get social. GitHub has one of the best interfaces for accessing various facets of a code project.
