The Little Tennessee is not a big river. It flows a mere 135 miles from its source in northeastern Georgia—some 3,240 feet above sea level—to its point of discharge at Lenoir City, Tennessee, where it joins the Tennessee River. Still, each time I paddle along this river I remind myself of how this waterway has played an outsized role in North American history.

It’s nearly the end of Native American Heritage Month, and although we like to celebrate and read Indigenous authors yearround, we didn’t want to miss the opportunity to feature some of our favorite recent nonfiction titles that center Indigenous stories. This is a list filled with books that highlight reclamation, identity, sexuality, climate, and white supremacy (to only name a few) via oral storytelling, art, music, poetry, and interview (to only name a few).
