French, British Rescuers Passed Buck As Migrants Drowned: Reports
Text size The French and British coastguard services passed the buck as a dinghy packed with migrants sank in the Channel last year, leading to the most deadly such accident on record, according to reports on Monday. Le Monde newspaper in France published revelations based on documents contained in a French legal investigation into the worst tragedy involving a migrant boat in the busy shipping lane.
President's Message: The Love Card
If you’ve been in business for more than a minute you’ve experienced an unsatisfied client. Maybe they noticed a flaw in your product years after the fact and wanted to know how you were going to fix it. How about a location session for which you had to travel, and the client never showed? Then there’s the challenging call that comes after a great sales session when the client says they’ve changed their mind; they’re no longer interested. After the shock wears off, you have to respond.
Shifting Your Paradigm for Success
© Tim Kelly and Kyla Renee Paintings Most of us have a defined vision of how we see the world. But consider for a moment that your perspective isn’t a mandate, that it’s just one way of filtering the day’s decisions and events. It’s possible the lens through which you view life has prevented you from seeing an alternate, even a better, world. How we perceive the world and set our expectations is strongly influenced by past experience.
President's Message: A Virtual and Physical World
© Tim Kelly and Kyla Renee Paintings The world is constantly changing, which has never been more apparent than it is in 2020. I often hear photographers lament that digital technology was the demise of our industry. But I also hear plenty who, thanks to digital innovations, have strategies for better dealing with today’s pandemic guidelines. Those who adapt to life-altering changes have a major advantage over those who don’t.
President's Message: Tame the Fear of No
© Tim Kelly and Kyla Renee Paintings Often, fear becomes an obstacle to achieving our dreams or goals in life. Would you rather sharpen your camera skills or maybe pore over hours of retouching videos than have a real life conversation with a client? In the sales room, are you more of an order taker than a strategic consultant with a well-crafted plan to recommend products that will solve your clients’ problems? If you answered yes to either question you are not alone.
President’s Message: A Secret to Growth
PPA President Gregory Daniel © Tim Kelly and Kyla Renee Paintings I don’t know anyone who doesn’t want to grow their business. But how? Does it feel like you’re reinventing the wheel every day? Do you find yourself watching an educational video and wanting to wipe the slate clean and start from scratch? Having your own business is hard work: being responsible for generating new clients every day, offering the right products, maintaining the cashflow to pay bills.
President's Message: Is Confidence a Factor?
PPA President Gregory Daniel © TIm Kelly and Kyla Renee Paintings Earlier this year, my wife, Lesa, and I were traveling to meet with the Professional Photographers of Oklahoma. Our connecting flight was in Atlanta, where our plane picked up 40 lively Georgia firefighters. At the gate, they gathered and bantered back and forth with animated gestures, laughing, backslapping, and welcoming new members into their circle as they arrived.
President's Message: It’s Not About You
GREGORY DANIEL © TIm Kelly and Kyla Renee Paintings As much as we like to think, It’s not about you, our clients predominantly care about themselves. And rightfully so. Put yourself in their shoes for a moment. Think how you’ve felt when entering into a buying experience. Recently my wife and I remodeled our master bathroom and learned so many applicable business lessons. We thought the remodel was something we could handle on our own but quickly found out we were wrong.
President's Message: Wake Up the Child Within
© Tim Kelly and Kyla Renee Paintings How to Reignite your Creativity Many of you sought out this wonderful profession after picking up a camera and falling in love with the images—that incredible feeling of seeing a scene from a different perspective or of capturing a spontaneous moment of someone you love. No matter what led you to the profession, I think we can safely say it ultimately comes down to a passion for the creative process.
President's Message: Break the Vicious Cycle
© Tim Kelly and Kyla Renee Paintings If you sometimes find yourself frustrated, confused, exhausted, or befuddled because of clients, you’re not alone. The gap between client and photographer seems to have grown over the years. Lots of fantastic image makers enter the profession and become dismayed at how difficult it is to create a sustainable business. Most photographers begin making photographs for the love of the art. They acquire education to enhance their technique and build their skill set.
President's Message: Create a Mastermind Alliance
© Tim Kelly and Kyla Renee Paintings If you’ve been in business for more than a minute you know it’s hard work. There are so many surprises, and there are fires to put out every day as an entrepreneur. The phone rings and a client puts you in a tailspin. Your email system serves up an endless stream of messages. Oh, and there’s that social media thing that draws you down the rabbit hole. My personal favorite is discovering a YouTube video for the latest Photoshop trick. Do I need to keep going?
President's Message: Develop Your Brand
© Tim Kelly and Kyla Renee Paintings PPA President Gregory Daniel Many years ago, during a long-term goal planning session, my wife, Lesa, and I recognized that our focus on being a general purpose, mom-and-pop studio needed to change. We determined that growth in the 21st century would depend on elevating our images to the level of fine art. As a result of our changed target, we developed a new business model and plan that would transform our studio over the next several years.

I cannot think of another occupation that provides such a wonderful lifestyle while giving so much joy not only to your clients but to yourself and your family as well. Photography provides endless opportunities for creating meaningful and lasting relationships with your clients.
