Standing with our Somali neighbors
By now, we have all seen the reports of President Trump disparaging our Somali communities — specifically, those in Minnesota — by describing them in a way we won’t repeat in this letter. We believe our faith requires us to speak out when our friends and neighbors are cruelly attacked in such a manner. Every major religious tradition calls us to walk in the ways of love and compassion.
Letter: We urge North Dakota's delegation to protect SNAP benefits
As clergy and faith communities rooted in the Bismarck area, we are witnessing firsthand the growing desperation of our members and neighbors. The food pantries and ministries we support are overwhelmed. Ministry on the Margins assisted 1,006 families experiencing food insecurity in September, 25% of whom were new. Due to high food prices and an increase in need, the food pantry in Lincoln is struggling to keep shelves stocked. Other pantries are in similar situations.
Letter to the editor: Create equal footing for every candidate
To the editor, The Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol is just one more indicator of the grave danger of the collapse of our American democracy, say many of our political analysts. According to national surveys, a vast majority of Americans are angry because they do not believe that the government is meeting their needs. They have lost faith and trust in their government.
Letter to the editor: I trust the judgment of Olive Ann's developer, Phil Gisi
To the editor, I was surprised and dismayed to learn the Grand Forks School Board "questioned the long-term viability" of the Olive Ann Boutique Hotel in downtown Grand Forks. Phil Gisi, the project’s developer, is one of the most successful business people in the state of North Dakota. Do board members think for a minute that he did not analyze the "long-term viability" before he is willing to invest $20 million in downtown Grand Forks?
Letter to the editor: SBA’s EIDL program lends aid after declared disasters; borrowers, take note
To the editor, The Small Business Administration approved 6,552 Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDL) in North Dakota, totaling over $745 million. In recent weeks I have heard several remarks about these loans. The EIDL program is designed to provide small businesses with working capital needed to overcome the negative financial impacts of a declared disaster. The operative word is loans. The EIDL program is a loan program with a 30-year maturity and an interest rate of 3.75% for most borrowers.
Letter to the editor: Disheartened to read that North Dakota is set to return federal funds
To the editor, It was disheartening to read that the state of North Dakota has decided to return to the federal government almost $150 million in rental support provided through the Emergency Rental Assistance Program. The past two years have been extremely difficult for our families, friends and neighbors. North Dakotans have felt the pain of lost loved ones, health crises, lost jobs and isolation, like millions of others in countries around the world.
