Abstract Since the global emergence of highly pathogenic genotype 2b (HP-G2b) porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) strains in 2013, these viruses have become endemic in South Korea. During local outbreaks, novel HP-G2b PEDV variants containing a 32-amino acid deletion (DEL) in nonstructural protein 3 (nsp3), designated NSP3-DEL32, were identified in several affected farms with low neonatal mortality.

1. Introduction Coronaviruses (CoVs) constitute a highly diverse group of enveloped single-stranded, positive-sense RNA viruses, primarily responsible for causing significant respiratory and enteric diseases in humans and diverse companion, domestic, and wild animals, posing a socioeconomic threat to both humans and animals [1–4]. Characterized by the largest RNA genome (~25–32 kb), CoVs belong to the subfamily Orthocoronavirinae within the family Coronaviridae of the order Nidovirales [5, 6].
