Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Writing about farming and business in Alabama. Learned a great deal from my colleagues and those I wrote about.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

I learned to type on an IBM Selectric, wrote high school term papers on an Olivetti and still tap out notes to my family on my Remington.

How is social media changing news?

In ways no one could have predicted at the onset of it all.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Spider Jerusalem of "Transmetropolitan."

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Deep-seated cynicism quarreling with effort to expand and develop community while avoiding chaff, falsehoods and charlatans.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

Hard to say. I'll have to think about that one.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email is superb. I respond to emails whether it's something I'd be interested in covering or not.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

My brain, wits and logic. My notepad, pencil, smart phone, laptop and audio recorder.

What's your favorite social network?

Each stands out in its own way.

Who do you wish followed you?

My dad.

Why did you become a journalist?

Initially it was to write about music, but it in the end it was because I wanted to do something I enjoyed and partake of the randomness.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Wrote and report and then served as its co-editor.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

All of them. Seriously.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Invest in a leather case for your notepad and carry a water-proof pencil and pad. Listen, to everyone & everything.
