Victory for Montenegro’s bird paradise!
At long last, the salt pans of Ulcinj Salina have been declared a national protected area! For the past 15 years, our Montenegrin partner CZIP has fought tirelessly to block a controversial building development poised to destroy one of Europe’s most important migratory bird resting and breeding sites. BirdLife partners up and down the flyways join CZIP in celebrating this epic victory for nature and people.
Flying into the face of danger
Shooting, trapping, poisoning – an average of 24 million birds are illegally slaughtered in the Mediterranean each year as they attempt their perilous migratory journey between Africa and Europe. The strongest migrants – weakened and vulnerable, having already travelled thousands of kilometres – are shot out of the sky, trapped in glue or invisible nets, or fatally poisoned.
#IvoteNature: European Elections 2019
The political and environmental stakes for Europe have never been higher – this is why BirdLife and LUSH Cosmetics have teamed up to call on citizens across the EU to ‘VOTE FOR NATURE’ in the European Elections, 23-26 May 2019. Birds can’t vote for themselves. But let’s step away from scientific reality – if only just for a second – and let ourselves imagine…“What if they could?” Would the Snowy owl, whose dramatic decline is linked to climate change, vote for leaders that ignore global warming?
Flight for Survival - Spring Migration 2019
This spring, BirdLife is telling the spectacular migratory stories of seven iconic birds – exposing the illegal threats they face along the African-Eurasian flyway. Are you ready to embark on nature’s most incredible journey? Join us as we follow our magnificent seven on their epic ‘Flight for Survival’. From the smallest songbirds to the most powerful birds of prey, migration is a flight for survival.
Rewilding - helping nature find its own way
With ambitious goals of bringing back lost species and restoring natural landscapes on a large scale, rewilding offers a narrative of hope to nature lovers – a ‘Recoverable Earth’. Restoration projects across Europe are increasingly implementing its principles. With nature in crisis, it is no wonder that rewilding resonates amongst a new generation of conservationists: the times we live in demand a new way of thinking.
#SaveSalina - Bird paradise in peril
Developers’ bulldozers are threatening to destroy one of Europe’s most important migratory bird resting and breeding sites – the salt pans of Ulcinj Salina on Montenegro’s southern coast. Sign the petition to #SaveSalina today! Every year, thousands of birds grace the 15 km2 coastal wetlands of Ulcinj Salina, Montenegro. Like clockwork, they flock in spring and autumn to this important migratory bird haven along the Adriatic flyway.
LIFE EuroSAP brings hope for 16 threatened species
With the conclusion of one of BirdLife’s most ambitious projects to date, ‘LIFE EuroSAP: Coordinated Efforts for International Species Recovery’ - and the publication of the project's final 'Layman's Report' - we reflect back on a mammoth three-year collaboration involving no less than nine BirdLife Partners, 65 countries and more than 500 individuals. The goal? To change the fate of 16 threatened bird species.
A race against crime: 5 years of Champions of the Flyway
Over the last five years, Champions of the Flyway has raised nearly $350,000 to help BirdLife partners tackle the illegal killing of birds in the Mediterranean. We look back on five years of inspirational partnership. Champions of the Flyway (COTF) is a race with a difference – not only is it a race against time, it’s also a race against crime: the illegal killing of birds.
LIFE is beautiful...in Italy
Our Italian partner LIPU has been awarded one of the EU’s most prestigious nature prizes – ‘Best LIFE Project’ - for their stunning work to create an ecological corridor between the Campo dei Fiori massif and Ticino Park in Lombardy. Life, as they say in Italy, is beautiful – La vita è bella. And where better to find the truth in this than amongst the vast chestnut and beech woods of the Campo dei Fiori massif in Lombardy’s Varese province, where wild boar and roe deer roam in idyllic setting.
BirdLife wins big at Natura 2000 Awards 2018
Five BirdLife partners scooped up awards for project work to protect Europe’s precious natural heritage at the annual Natura 2000 Awards ceremony in Brussels last night. In the April edition of our monthly newsletter from Europe & Central Asia, we proudly reported that BirdLife national partners had swept up nearly a third of the nominations for the EU’s prestigious Natura 2000 Awards.
Kulan roam the steppes of central Kazakhstan once again
The latest update from ACBK/BirdLife Kazakhstan on its project to reintroduce a small herd of Turkmenian kulan to central Kazakhstan, long after the wild ass species disappeared from the region. At the end of last year, Danara Zharbolova from our Kazakh partner ACBK recounted the promising first steps in an exciting project to establish a new population of Turkmenian kulan in Central Kazakhstan.
Great White Pelican discovery in Turkey
A major stopover site of Europe’s Great White Pelicans has recently been discovered in Turkey. A count conducted by our Turkish partner Doğa Derneği showed that more than 15,000 pelicans stop off at the Karacabey Floodplain to roost and feed during their spring migration.
The Natura 2000 Awards 2018
Awards season in Europe is about to start! And while film lovers are gearing up for the world’s most glamorous movie stars to hit the red carpet in Cannes next week, nature lovers are eagerly awaiting for the ‘green carpet’ event of the year – the European Union’s annual ‘Natura 2000 Awards 2018’ on 17 May.  The Natura 2000 awards reward excellence in the management of the EUs Natura 2000 network - the world’s largest coordinated network of protected nature sites.

'Spring Alive' casts its spell with real magic
Spring has officially sprung and so has Spring Alive – BirdLife International’s annual campaign to introduce children across Europe, Central Asia and Africa to the joys of spring and the wonder that is nature. Harry Potter – beloved by children around the globe – may be a wizarding wonder but he has nothing on the ‘real’ magic in store for us over the next number of weeks: the magic of migration.
A Tale of Two Treaties
In the United States, one of the world’s most important and influential bird protection laws is under threat – but all is yet not lost. Across the pond, BirdLife mobilised over half a million EU citizens to turn around a similar crisis - here’s how we did it. This is a tale of two nature laws – the United States’ Migratory Birds Treaty Act 1918 (MBTA) and the European Union’s Birds and Habitats Directives.
Soaring high: safeguarding migratory birds over Turkey
For more than 15 years, our Turkish BirdLife partner Doğa Derneği (DD) has been working to safeguard migratory birds. And now, thanks to £50, 000 of vital funding raised by SPNI (BirdLife Israel), they have been able to greatly step-up their actions. The birds-eye view over the bustling, transcontinental city of Istanbul – with its 2,000 years of rich cultural history straddling the Bosphorus Strait and the Black Sea – must be something truly spectacular to behold.
The Silence of the Leaders
A ‘Silence of the Lambs’-inspired demonstration organised by BirdLife in Brussels last Friday saw 133 European NGOs demand more money for the EU to protect biodiversity. With nature conservation glaringly absent from the discussions on the future of Europe, civil society called on those gathered to break the ‘Silence of the Leaders’.
The Bird Bulletin: Europe & Central Asia

BREAK ‘THE SILENCE OF THE LEADERS’! – with EU Heads of State in Brussels this morning to discuss the EU Budget, 133 international NGOs, led by BirdLife Europe and NABU, held a ‘Silence of the Lambs’ inspired demonstration for ‘more money for nature’.
#OceanAlert: Between the Devil and the deep blue sea
As a direct result of fishing, tens of thousands of threatened seabirds, turtles and marine mammals needlessly perish in European waters each year. The EU’s recent attempts to tackle the issue have failed so spectacularly that even e-NGOs are now saying ‘no legislation is better than bad legislation’. Bruna Campos examines how EU marine policy ended up ‘between the Devil and the deep blue sea’ – and where we must go from here.
Cliffs lying barren: why we can't afford to ignore the Kittiwake crash
The nomadic Black-legged Kittiwake Rissa tridactyla crosses great swathes of the Atlantic outside the breeding season. Yet each year, fewer and fewer are making it back to dry land, and the number of chicks produced per nest is in steep decline. Once thriving cliff colonies of thousands in former coastal bastions in Scotland, Greenland and Norway lie barren. On the isles of Orkney and Shetland, numbers have plummeted by 87% since 2000, and by 96% on the Hebridean island of St Kilda.

Lead poisoning: the long goodbye
1 million birds are fatally poisoned in Europe each year by ingesting lead shot from expended cartridges. The EU’s European Chemicals Agency is currently considering an EU-wide ban on the use of lead shot for hunting in wetlands. It is running an online public consultation on the issue until 21st December.

Raising the Eagle Standard
5 countries, 11 NGOs, 4 BirdLife partners, 3.5 million EUROS and one enigmatic bird of prey – PannonEagle LIFE is an ambitious 5 year conservation project to keep the Eastern Imperial Eagle Aquila helica soaring through the skies of ancient Pannonia. In the armies of ancient Rome, one soldier was given the noble duty of bearing the standard of his legion – a potent symbol of military glory and a rallying point amid the tumult of battle.

Ban Vet Diclofenac!
Vultures are declining world-wide, but Europe used to be a safe place. 3 years ago this changed radically when approval was given to the commercialisation of veterinary diclofenac. Today, we launch a new international campaign in Spain, Portugal and Italy that aims to ban the drug that could wipe out Europe’s vultures… just as it has already nearly done in Asia.
Paradise lost: the devastation of Białowieża Forest
There was a time, not so long ago, when the Narewka road took its travellers on a journey to what felt like a whole other world, to a whole other age – for the road leads you deep into the heart of Białowieża Forest. Here, straddling the border between Poland and Belarus, lies a living, breathing relic of antiquity – the largest surviving remnant of the vast primeval forest that once swathed the Great European Plain in a sea of lush greenness from the Atlantic to the Urals.

The Meaning of LIFE
This week, the European Union celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome. Gui-Xi Young examines the 'meaning' of LIFE - the EU"s fund for nature, environment and climate protection. As we celebrate the 60th year of European unity, and in a time when this unity is being tested, we would be wise to recognise the protection of our shared environment as the great purpose – and the great unifier – of our times.
One Million People 4 Soil
Tiziano Cattaneo (People4Soil) and Gui Xi Young (BirdLife) explain why the EU has a duty to preserve one of Europe’s most important natural resources: soil. Soil – it’s that thin layer of minerals, water and gases, and of living organisms and decaying organic matter, which covers much of our planet’s land surface. What a disproportionately small word for such a colossally important thing. Even the ancient Greek term ‘pedolith’ – literally ‘ground stone’ – does not do it justice.

17 long seconds pass before a single word is spoken in Gregor Subic’s thought-provoking documentary ‘The Endangered Treasure of Ulcinj’. Yet these 17 seconds speak volumes: gentle, melodious birdsong is malevolently pierced by wind eerily drumming timeworn metal roofing – the rusty relics of a once huge and thriving salt production complex on the sun kissed shores of Montenegro’s Adriatic coast.
