Room-temperature flash sintering of silicon carbide ceramics via novel carbon electrodes
Abstract Using a composite layered carbon electrode structure, this study achieved room-temperature flash sintering of disc-shaped SiC ceramics without sintering aids. Under a DC voltage of 100 V, the developed method enabled the preparation of sintered SiC discs (20 mm diameter) in 180 s with a relative density of 94.13%. Despite exhibiting a larger grain size relative to conventionally sintered counterparts, the flash-sintered samples developed well-defined grain boundaries.
