1 Introduction Reinforced concrete (RC) pier walls are characterized by their large cross-sectional aspect ratio (Lw /tw), implying a long wall length (Lw) relative to a small thickness (tw), as illustrated in Figure 1. Owing to their inherently high lateral stiffness in the strong-axis direction [1, 2], current seismic design provisions mandate that the in-plane response of pier walls remain within the elastic range.
