Dear Best Friend
When I set out to start writing my first book in 2009, which turned into my debut novel, a vital bit of writing advice became my North Star in the whole process—a star that remains fixed to this day. I actually don’t remember where I originally heard it from, but it resonated, and I kept this advice in the forefront of my mind. It is something I now share with every student in every writing class and workshop I do, no matter if I am talking about novels or screenplays, because it is invaluable.
The Story Heart ~ Tips from a Screenwriter Turned Novelist
For the past year I have been teaching screenwriting at Houston City College, which has been a joy as well as a return to my roots. Before I began writing novels, I wrote feature screenplays for ten years, working with producers, directors, and actors, and studio development execs crafting feature screenplays—and before that, I went to graduate school at CalArts for Directing Theatre & Film. The program was all about how to tell a story and dramatic construction.

DREAM BIG: It’s the Year of the Fire Horse
What is your Dream Book? Do you have one? That story that has been circling your mind but you have not been ready to write? We are already easing well into 2026 with February almost behind us, but Chinese New Year just began three days ago, on February 17th. In Eastern astrology, it is the year of the Fire Horse – blazing through the months with passion and creativity. In Numerology 2026 reduces down to 1 (2+0+2+6), symbolizing a year of powerful new beginnings. In other words, a lucky year.
Time Travel for Writers
The mystery of time is a running theme in my work, from the evolution of timekeeping to the metaphysical ideas being proposed in the world of physics. Perhaps I’ve written one too many time travel books because there is a mental exercise I find that I do when I’m working on a story and feeling stuck in the weeds. Perhaps I’ve lost my way on a revision or I’m grappling with a deadline—or doubting the path I’ve taken with a character or the story.

This is a blast of a read, pure story adrenaline. The two main characters, Roan West and Melicent Tilpin, are psychometrists, people who can read the memories in objects with their hands. From the award-winning author of The Memory Painter comes a sweeping and suspenseful tale of romance, fate, and fortune. Its author tells the story of a priceless tarot deck, now lost to history, but as Semele delves further, she realizes the manuscript is more than it seems.
A Rioter shares his first experience
When Book Riot editors informed contributors that we could apply for press credentials at 2017’s BookCon, I was thrilled. After taking place in Chicago last year, this year’s BookCon was back home at the NYC Javits Center June 3-4. I’d never been to Book Expo or BookCon before and had no idea what to expect. My naivete was exposed when I discovered I didn’t even understand the difference between the two.
