Introduction: Preoperative chemoradiotherapy with total mesorectal excision (TME) is the recommended standard therapy for patients with locally advanced rectal cancer. Sauer et al (N Engl J Med 2004) reported a randomized study that showed that preoperative chemoradiotherapy (CRT) improved local control and was associated with reduced toxicity compared with postoperative chemoradiotherapy.
