The major goal of this quality improvement (QI) study is to assess the feasibility and utility of wearable devices for assessing inpatient sleep and activity. The project received a non-human-subject research (NHR) designation by the MGB IRB, based on its iterative nature, lack of systematic procedures, and goals to improve clinical care in a way not intended to create knowledge generalizable to other settings.

Digital phenotyping offers a novel approach for monitoring day-to-day fluctuations of experiences, symptoms, and behaviors in natural environments. This study investigates the reliability of smartphone-based ecological assessments, utilizing both active and passive data, to track changes across various symptom dimensions in severe mental illness (SMI).
