Engineering mice for female-biased progeny without impacting genetic integrity and litter size
Abstract Generating mammalian gametes with a skewed sex ratio has thus far eluded empirical confirmation. The utilization of such genetically engineered organisms would offer the potential to curtail the necessity for culling animals of undesirable sex, mitigate resource wastage, and alleviate superfluous labor burdens. In this study, we introduce a transgenic male mouse lineage, which consistently yields predominantly female progeny (comprising up to 91% of the total offspring).
Pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) negates hyperandrogenic PCOS features
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), one of the most common female endocrine disorder, is a prevalent cause of infertility. Hyperandrogenism is a key feature in PCOS and is correlated with increased expression of VEGF and cytokines in the ovaries. We have previously shown that pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF), an endogenous protein, presents potent anti-angiogenic and anti-inflammatory activities in the ovary and negates the effects of cytokines and VEGF.
Pigment epithelium derived factor as a novel multi-target treatment for uterine fibroids
Abstract Research Question Does recombinant PEDF (rPEDF) have a potential in treating uterine fibroids. Design In-vitro model: Eker rat uterine leiomyoma (ELT-3) cell line; cellular targets were examined following rPEDF addition to the culture media. In-vivo model: Athymic nude female mice were injected with ELT-3 cells to induce uterine fibroids; mice were treated with rPEDF.
