The basement is where the rules are learned. Beer gathers in sticky pools on the floor, and the air carries the smell of whatever has already been spilled. Someone has knocked over a cup, maybe two. A ball skims the edge of a plastic rim while the next players wait along the edges of the room, heckling, laughing and waiting for their turn. The rules begin with small things — where the cups sit, how hard the ball can be hit, whether the game moves fast or floats in long lobs.

On Friday, a group of student activists held a rally in front of the Black Family Visual Arts Center to call on the College to remove eponymous alumnus and former trustee Leon Black ’73’s name from the building. Approximately 20 students, faculty and community members attended the protest. In 2012, the Debra and Leon Black Family Foundation donated $48 million to fund BVAC’s construction.

After senior vice president and senior diversity officer Shontay Delalue steps down at the end of June, institutional diversity and equity will no longer operate as a standalone senior administrative office at the College. The office will move under the Office of Community and Campus Life, overseen by senior vice president Jennifer Rosales, Dartmouth News announced on May 15.
