China’s military parade: a rude awakening for western imperialism
For some time, military parades were obscure remnants of the past. American imperialism was too powerful. Any other country showcasing its military might for the world to see would merely underline the large discrepancy between the US and everyone else. Not any more. Last week’s military parade in Beijing, the largest in Chinese history, marked an important change.
Dual role of Metrnl: exercise-induced benefits and potential cancer implications
Cytokine T-Lymphocytes Tumor microenvironment - TME Tumor infiltrating lymphocyte - TIL Introduction Exercise is a proven ally in cancer prevention and treatment, enhancing immune surveillance, curbing inflammation and optimizing metabolism.1 These benefits are partly mediated by myokines—cytokines secreted by skeletal muscles during activity.2 Meteorin-like protein (Metrnl) emerges as a complex player, promoting metabolic health,3 while raising questions about its role in cancer.4 In the...
The fallout of Israel’s failed attempt to crush Gaza
The guns have fallen silent in Gaza, for now. After fifteen months, a ceasefire agreement has brought a pause to the relentless genocidal killing of tens of thousands of Palestinians and the near total destruction of the Palestinian enclave by the state of Israel. The first thing to note is this: the Palestinians did not bow or surrender even as they stood there, practically defenceless, under the ceaseless onslaught of one of the deadliest military machines in the world.

Assad falls, Islamists take over Syria
The Syrian regime has collapsed. Bashar al-Assad has fled the country. His army has disarmed, and his government has capitulated. The prisons have been overrun, and thousands have been released. Meanwhile, thousands of Syrians have taken to the streets in celebration. The power vacuum is being filled by local militias and warlords who have taken hold of different localities throughout the country. Druze militias have taken over Sweida and nearby localities in the south.
The unravelling of Syria: a legacy of imperialist war and meddling
In yet another sudden and sharp event, highly characteristic of the period of history we are living through, a surprise offensive by Syrian Islamist militants is fast unravelling Syria. Israel’s western-backed wars against Gaza and Lebanon have upended the fragile equilibrium in the Middle East and pulled a thread that has begun unwinding the fabric of the region.
Trump vs the ‘deep state’
The weeks that follow a presidential election, when the outgoing President occupies himself with putting the finishing touches on his legacy while leaving it to the President-elect to put together the team that will take the reins of power, are usually a fallow period in US politics. Not this time. On the one hand, the outgoing president is engaged in a breathtakingly cynical and reckless game of brinkmanship against Russia.

How Lenin studied Hegel
In the autumn of 1914 Lenin began a detailed study of Hegel’s writings. His notes contain a brilliant insight into the dialectical method, of which he was a master. In this article, Hamid Alizadeh draws out the essential aspects of this method, underlining the fundamental importance of theory for the communist movement. In the summer of 1914, war broke out in Europe and the course of world history changed overnight.
The Iranian Revolution of 1979
The Iranian Revolution was one of the most inspiring revolutionary episodes of the post-war period. Without any pre-adopted plan, programme, or leadership, the Iranian masses rose up against the regime of the Shah – a key ally of US imperialism, notorious for its brutality. Not only did the movement sweep this decrepit regime away, it also managed to push out the old ruling class and take charge of the whole of the economy.
What should Communists do about the Ukraine war?
With NATO staring down the barrel of an embarrassing defeat in the Ukraine war, the western imperialists’ boastful jingoism has turned into its opposite. While some on the so-called ‘left’ continue to call for support for Zelensky’s gang – thereby betraying the interests of workers everywhere – the Communists have taken a principled, internationalist position since day one.
James Joyce's Dubliners: a masterful depiction of decaying capitalism
Following the article on James Joyce’s Ulysses, published in issue 39 of In Defence of Marxism magazine, Hamid Alizadeh of the IDOM editorial board writes on Joyce’s Dubliners: a masterful critique of the paralysis, hypocrisy and alienation of Irish bourgeois society in the 20th century, which epitomised the ferment brewing in Ireland in the years prior to the Easter Rising of 1916.
The widening fissures in world relations and the task of communists
The crisis of capitalism is also the crisis of the post-USSR world order, which was based on the domination of US imperialism. With the rise of China as a world power, Russia taking an increasingly defiant stance internationally, and the US unable to intervene militarily on a large scale, the world policeman’s stick doesn’t carry the weight, nor guarantee the compliance, that it once did. This has major implications for the balance of power on the world stage.
The Enlightenment and Spinoza's revolutionary rationalism
Born in 1632 in the Dutch Republic, the rationalist philosopher Baruch Spinoza was one of the great fathers of Enlightenment thinking. As Hamid Alizadeh explains, Spinoza’s philosophy – which contained a materialist and atheistic kernel – represented a revolutionary challenge to the authority of both Church and state. The age of Enlightenment, also known as the age of Reason, was one of the most inspiring episodes in human history.
Marxismi vs. postmodernismi

Revolutionary tremours in Iran after the murder of young Kurdish girl
Protests have broken out all over Iran, following the murder of a young Kurdish woman, Jina Mahsa Amini, by Iran’s notorious morality police. Beginning in the Kurdish areas of Iran, the protests spread to more than 30 cities, including all the largest in the country: Tehran, Mashhad, Isfahan, Karaj, Tabriz and the so-called holy city of Qom. What started as a reaction against police brutality has quickly turned into a mood of rage against the regime as a whole.
Marxism versus postmodernism
Postmodernism is an amorphous philosophical school of thought that rose to prominence in the postwar period. Beginning as a fringe trend, it has since grown to become one of the dominant schools of bourgeois philosophy, permeating large parts, if not the majority, of academia today. It embodies the utter dead-end and pessimism of bourgeois philosophy given the senile decay of capitalist society.

In Defence of Hegel
Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel was born 250 years ago on 27 August 1770 into a petty-bourgeois family in the German city of Stuttgart. A towering genius with an encyclopaedic mind, Hegel revolutionised every field that he dedicated himself to. The impact of Hegel’s ideas cannot be underestimated, and as Marxists we owe him a tremendous debt.
A revolutionary way forward for the Palestinian liberation struggle
We publish here an open letter to the Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network. The network has published an open appeal called “It is time for the ‘Palestinian leadership’ to go!” This statement can be read below the letter. Dear comrades of Samidoun, The Palestinian liberation struggle has always been a question of extreme importance for Marxists.
Coronavirus pandemic opens a new stage in world history
Events on a world scale are moving at breakneck speed. The new coronavirus (COVID-19) has set in motion a chain reaction, which is upending any semblance of stability in one country after another. All of the contradictions of the capitalist system are coming crashing to the surface. Thousands of people have lost their lives and hundreds of thousands have likely been infected. But there is no indication that the pandemic has peaked. The number of deceased is going up by 20-30 percent every day.

Argentina, Turkey and the debt bomb under the world economy
While all eyes are on the unfolding trade war between China and the United States, another crisis in the world economy is threatening to spin out of control. Since April, Argentina and Turkey have seen their currencies collapse and inflation spiral. Other so-called emerging economies such as Indonesia, India, Brazil and South Africa are also coming under similar pressures.
[Video] The fall of Aleppo and the hypocrisy of the west
Hamid Alizadeh discusses the impending fall of Aleppo to Syrian loyalist forces, and highlights the hypocrisy of the Western imperialists and media, who draw attention to the tragic events in Aleppo whilst failing to mention the humanitarian disaster unfolding in Yemen at the hands of the Saudis and their US & British allies.
NATO and the contradictions within western Imperialism
The recent NATO summit in Warsaw was full of contradiction and tensions between members of the alliance. The fragility of NATO’s power and the instability of world relations were on display for all to see. The headline decision taken at the summit was the stationing of a four battalion multinational force rotating between Poland and the Baltic states.
