While predated by Uhl’s product of Al–Al insertion from the reaction of tetrakis[bis(trimethylsilyl)methyl]dialane(4) with lithium phenylethynide, (1) access to three-membered AlC2 heterocycles has more commonly been achieved by oxidation of molecular Al(I) species. Such compounds engage by effective [2 + 1] cycloaddition with the unsaturated C–C bonds of alkenes and alkynes.

General Considerations Unless stated otherwise, all experiments were conducted using standard Schlenk line and/or glovebox techniques under an inert atmosphere of argon. NMR spectra were recorded with a Bruker Avance III spectrometer ( 1 H at 400 MHz, 13 C at 101 MHz) or an Agilent ProPulse spectrometer ( 1 H at 500 MHz, 13 C at 126 MHz). The spectra are referenced relative to residual protio solvent resonances.
