A Whatcom County Superior Court judged ruled Thursday morning that the man accused of raping a child at St. Joseph Medical Center must undergo competency restoration services before he can stand trial. Alexander Kyle Humphries, 37, of Bellingham was arrested May 19 after allegedly raping a 14-year-old child while the two were patients in the specialized emergency care unit at St. Joseph Medical Center in Bellingham.

A Bellingham man accused of shooting two National Guard members, one fatally, in Washington, D.C. in November was indicted Tuesday on new charges that are eligible for the death penalty, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia. Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 30, allegedly drove across the country with a stolen gun and opened fire in D.C. on Nov. 26. Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom, 20, died from her injuries. Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, was critically injured.

U.S. Border Patrol agents blocked off an area in Blaine the morning of June 16, 2026, as they investigate an officer-involved shooting. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for Western District of Washington has identified the person shot by a U.S. Border Patrol agent in Blaine on Tuesday morning as 39-year-old Nathaniel Anthony Muniz-Spry of Everson. He has been federally charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm.
