1 Introduction Bowel cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the United Kingdom with approximately 44,000 people diagnosed annually [1], but it is the United Kingdom's second largest cancer killer, with over 55% of bowel cancers detected at Stages 3 or 4 [2]. If detected at Stage 1, there is a 90% 5-year survival rate, compared to just 10% when detected at Stage 4 [3]. The purpose of the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme (BCSP) is to detect bowel cancer at an earlier, more treatable stage.
