GLOBAL In an increasingly polarised society, student activism also tends to be more polarised towards the extreme left or right. The clash between extreme-left and -right activists in Lyon, France, resulting in the death of a student affiliated with the extreme right, is a recent illustration of this polarisation. Universities struggle to deal with these protests and with pressure from politicians to stop left-wing activism, while extreme-right activism on campuses seems overlooked.

Student mobility outlook: Expect more South-South focus

GLOBAL For several decades, the international mobility of degree-seeking students as a phenomenon was quite clear to understand in terms of sending and receiving countries, and took place principally from South to North. The main sending countries were China, India and South Korea, followed by a range of other ones, and the main host countries were the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada, also referred to as the Big (Anglophone) Four, followed by France and Germany.
