Turing-like tests for language and vision demonstrate a narrowing gap between humans and AI
Abstract As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly embedded in daily life, ascertaining whether an agent is human is critical. Here we systematically benchmark AI’s ability to imitate humans in three language tasks (image captioning, word association and conversation) and three vision tasks (colour estimation, object detection and attention prediction), collecting data from n = 636 humans and 37 AI agents.

Predictive design of stretchable electrodes with strain-insensitive performance via robotics- and machine learning-integrated workflow
3 hours ago This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Akaash Vishal Hazarika, a 29-year-old senior software engineer based in Seattle. It's been edited for length and clarity. I've been a Big Tech employee for the past eight years, working at Google, Amazon, Splunk, and now Salesforce. I've had a …
Predictive design of stretchable electrodes with strain-insensitive performance via robotics- and machine learning-integrated workflow - Nature Communications
Abstract Innovations in wearable electronics and soft robotics hinge significantly on the development of stretchable electrodes. However, a persistent challenge lies in balancing high stretchability, functional performance, and strain insensitivity. Conventional approaches, such as design of experiments and trial-and-error methods, often rely on time-consuming and labor-intensive experiments to navigate a vast and complex parameter space.
Mapping isoforms and regulatory mechanisms from spatial transcriptomics data with SPLISOSM - Nature Biotechnology
|
Abstract Transcript diversity including splicing and alternative 3′ end usage is crucial for cellular identity and adaptation, yet its spatial coordination remains poorly understood. Here we present SPLISOSM (spatial isoform statistical modeling), a method for detecting isoform-resolution patterns from spatial transcriptomics data. SPLISOSM uses multivariate testing with nonparametric kernels to account for spot-level and isoform-level dependencies, achieving high statistical power on sparse data.

Mouse liver assembloids model periportal architecture and biliary fibrosis - Nature
Abstract Modelling liver disease requires in vitro systems that replicate disease progression1,2. Current tissue-derived organoids fail to reproduce the complex cellular composition and tissue architecture observed in vivo3. Here, we describe a multicellular organoid system composed of adult hepatocytes, cholangiocytes and mesenchymal cells that recapitulates the architecture of the liver periportal region and, when manipulated, models aspects of cholestatic injury and biliary fibrosis.

Machine intelligence accelerated design of conductive MXene aerogels with programmable properties - Nature Communications
Abstract Designing ultralight conductive aerogels with tailored electrical and mechanical properties is critical for various applications. Conventional approaches rely on iterative, time-consuming experiments across a vast parameter space. Herein, an integrated workflow is developed to combine collaborative robotics with machine learning to accelerate the design of conductive aerogels with programmable properties.
Machine intelligence-accelerated discovery of all-natural plastic substitutes - Nature Nanotechnology
Abstract One possible solution against the accumulation of petrochemical plastics in natural environments is to develop biodegradable plastic substitutes using natural components. However, discovering all-natural alternatives that meet specific properties, such as optical transparency, fire retardancy and mechanical resilience, which have made petrochemical plastics successful, remains challenging. Current approaches still rely on iterative optimization experiments.
Single-phase local-high-concentration solid polymer electrolytes for lithium-metal batteries - Nature Energy
Abstract Solid polymers are promising electrolytes for Li-metal batteries, but they have limitations: they cannot simultaneously achieve high ionic conductivity, good mechanical strength and compatibility with high-voltage cathodes while suppressing Li dendrites. Here, we design a class of locally high-concentration solid polymer electrolytes based on polymer blends, which are termed Li-polymer in F diluter (LPIFD).

Adversarial interspecies relationships facilitate population suppression by gene drive in spatially explicit models
Abstract Suppression gene drives bias their inheritance to spread through a population, potentially eliminating it when they reach high frequency. CRISPR homing suppression drives have already seen success in the laboratory, but several models predict that success may be elusive in population with realistic spatial structure due to extinction-recolonization cycles. Here, we extend our continuous space framework to include two competing species or predator–prey pairs.
Topographic design in wearable MXene sensors with in-sensor machine learning for full-body avatar reconstruction - Nature Communications
Abstract Wearable strain sensors that detect joint/muscle strain changes become prevalent at human–machine interfaces for full-body motion monitoring. However, most wearable devices cannot offer customizable opportunities to match the sensor characteristics with specific deformation ranges of joints/muscles, resulting in suboptimal performance.

A safe and fast-charging lithium-ion battery anode using MXene supported Li3VO4
A safe and fast-charging lithium-ion battery anode using MXene supported Li3VO4 During fast charging, the commonly used Li-ion battery anode material graphite has a significant shortcoming that its discharge potential is too low to guarantee the safety of batteries. Li3VO4 (LVO), an alternative anode material, has a safe discharge potential window of 0.5 V to 1.0 V vs. Li+/Li and high theoretical capacity (~394 mAh/g).
