Turner watercolour Sunrise Over The Sea sells for more than £1m
It had been expected to fetch between £600,000 and £800,000 during Christie’s Old Master and British Drawings and Watercolours sale. On Tuesday Christie’s revealed the work had been sold for a total of £1,032,200. Harriet Drummond, international head of british drawings and watercolours at the auctioneer, said the price had reflected in part the care with which the painting had been kept.

Sales tax could create unconstitutional conflict
By Harriet Drummond Alaska’s legislature is under great pressure to put a fiscal plan in place after dismal spring revenue projections show the state heading towards a $900 million deficit. A key part of any plan will have to include some sort of tax-based revenue. Currently, Alaskans pay no taxes to support their state government. There are some who believe that is how it should be. Most Alaskans, however, understand that paying nothing for state services is not normal.

Letter: Mayor gets an F
By Harriet Drummond Updated: 2 hours ago Published: 2 hours ago Nobody in the mayor’s office seems to be able to do basic math. If his proposed budget relied on $4.6 million less in property taxes, divided among 92,000 property tax payers, the average savings would have been only $50. How does the mayor come up with savings of $560 per property taxpayer? — Harriet Drummond Anchorage Have something on your mind? Send to letters@adn.com or click here to submit via any web browser.

Letter: Gara has earned support
By Harriet Drummond Updated: 28 minutes ago Published: 28 minutes ago I’ve worked with Les Gara and I know he’s by far the greatest supporter of public education in this governor’s race. An October ADN article rightly pointed out that the 2005 law eliminating modest pensions for teachers, as well as troopers, firefighters and other essential public employees, has caused many of our best to leave Alaska. Les voted against this elimination of pension benefits.
A pivotal moment in Alaska’s history
News-Miner Community Perspective:This moment in Alaska’s history is pivotal in determining what our future as a state will look like. The sudden drop in oil prices and the broken promises of increased oil production in return for excessive tax cuts and credits have resulted in a nearly $3.5 billion budget gap that must be closed. Alaska is required by law to produce a balanced budget. However, a budget is more than just numbers on a page.
