Head over heart? Previewing Ireland's RWC chances
Neil Treacy is joined by former Ireland international centres Darren Cave and James Downey on the RTÉ Rugby World Cup podcast. We take a general look ahead at RWC 2023, and whether or not Ireland can break their quarter-final glass ceiling. The pair discuss how Ireland are likely to line out for Saturday's opening game against Romania in Bordeaux, with Johnny Sexton set to return from his injury and suspension to play his first game since March.
Man City to face Mexican or Japanese side in World Cup
Manchester City will face Club Leon of Mexico or Japan's Urawa Red Diamonds in the FIFA Club World Cup semi-finals in December in Saudi Arabia after the draw was made this afternoon. In the other semi-final, the Copa Libertadores winners, yet to be decided, will face Saudi Arabia's Al-Ittihad, Auckland City of New Zealand or Egypt's Al Ahly. The host nation's champions, Saudi Pro League winners Al-Ittihad, will kick off the competition against Auckland City.
Ogbene relishing rise from Limerick to Premier League
Even if the Player of the Match award at the Aviva Stadium wasn't restricted to those in green shirts, Chiedozie Ogbene would probably have gotten the nod for his relentless performance in Republic of Ireland's loss to France last March.
GAA to decide on August All-Ireland football final
The GAA's Central Council will this weekend decide whether to retain the Allianz Football League finals and push the All-Ireland SFC final back into August. Despite a hectic and compacted split-season calendar, it now looks increasingly likely that the four divisional finals will be retained next year. But counties are still looking for an extra week to be found between the end of the league and start of the championship, which seems likely to delay the start of the club season.
Henderson hopes to create 'positive change' in Saudi
Jordan Henderson has apologised for any hurt he has caused to the LGBTQ+ community and insists his move to Saudi Arabia can help the gay rights movement. The England midfielder was a high-profile and vocal supporter of LGBTQ+ rights as Liverpool captain but has been heavily criticised after agreeing to a lucrative switch to Saudi Pro League club Al-Ettifaq.
Huge blow for Ireland as Ferguson ruled out of games
Evan Ferguson has been ruled out of the Republic of Ireland's Euro 2024 qualifiers against France and Netherlands this week. The Brighton and Hove Albion forward sustained a knee injury in the 3-0 win over Newcastle United on Saturday. Ferguson reported for international duty on Sunday but after assessment from the Ireland medical team, he has been ruled out of both fixtures. The rest of the squad will travel to Paris later today.
Man released on bail over alleged headbutt on Keane
A man arrested on suspicion of headbutting Roy Keane has been released on bail until late September. The 42-year-old is accused of assault causing actual bodily harm over a confrontation with Keane at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday. Footage was posted on social media of fellow Sky Sports pundit Micah Richards stepping in to move the suspect away from Keane. The confrontation followed Arsenal's 3-1 victory over Manchester United.
Serbian Simanic loses kidney after injury at World Cup
Serbian Borisa Simanic underwent surgery to remove a kidney after taking a blow to his midsection against South Sudan at the Basketball World Cup last week, Serbia's basketball federation said on Monday. South Sudan's Nuni Omot has apologised for the incident, though match officials saw no foul play.
Twomey ends Cork tenure in wake of All-Ireland win
Matthew Twomey has brought the curtain down on his tenure as Cork senior camogie manager, just a month after guiding the county to All-Ireland glory. The Douglas club man reportedly informed the county board of his decision not to seek a further year in charge on Monday night. Twomey was appointed Cork manager in November 2021 on a two-year term, succeeding four-time All-Ireland winning boss Paudie Murray.
Farrell could opt to play Sexton in every pool game
Finally, the World Cup will get underway in France this weekend. This World Cup cycle has been hugely positive for Ireland, a clear evolution since the 2019 quarter-final loss to New Zealand. Not to suggest, however, that is has all been plain sailing either. Andy Farrell and his coaches took some time to change the shape of Ireland's game, instilling different habits and thought processes around their decision-making on the field.
McCarthy ready to wrestle his way into Ireland team
Ireland lock Joe McCarthy says wrestling matches and reassuring chats with his younger brother helped pave the way to his maiden Rugby World Cup. The 22-year-old only made his international debut against Australia last autumn and was included in Andy Farrell's 33-man squad for France despite just 129 minutes of Test experience across three caps.
US Open spectator removed for shouting 'Hitler phrase'
A fan was ejected from the US Open on Monday after Germany's Alexander Zverev protested about a "Hitler phrase" being shouted from the stands. Zverev was serving in the fourth set of his last-16 battle with Italy's Jannik Sinner on the Arthur Ashe Stadium when the drama unfolded. The 12th-seeded Zverev approached chair umpire James Keothavong to complain about the alleged catcall. "He just said the most famous Hitler phrase there is in this world," Zverev told the umpire.
Irish fans feel the time is now
Nine times Ireland have travelled to World Cups in hope and expectation but have come up short on each occasion. They remain the only top-tier nation not to have reached the last four. Golden generations, good draws, bad draws, injury-jinxes, shock losses and routine exits: Ireland have a complete bingo book of Webb Ellis failures. Superfan Majella Ryan has seen first-hand the pain of Paris in 2007, the washout in Wellington in 2011 and the Shizuoka sayonara four years ago.
Shelbourne ready for second crack at Champions League
After last year's maiden voyage in Champions League waters, Shelbourne are eagerly looking forward to testing themselves again in Europe when they take on Glasgow City in Lithuania on Wednesday morning (kick-off 10am). The carrot for Noel King’s side is that should they defeat the current Scottish league champions, they would face the winners of FC Gintra of Lithuania or Cardiff City (Wales) in the same venue.
