Preventive catheter ablation for ventricular arrhythmias in patients with end‐stage heart failure referred for heart transplantation evaluation: Rationale for and design of the CASTLE‐VT trial
Introduction Patients with a history of myocardial infarction and impaired left ventricular function are at high risk for subsequent sudden cardiac death (SCD) from ventricular tachycardia (VT) or ventricular fibrillation (VF).1, 2 Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) significantly decrease mortality rates and have emerged as the major strategy for preventing SCD in these patients.
Effects of atrial fibrillation ablation on arrhythmia burden and ventricular function in end‐stage heart failure: Lessons from CASTLE‐HTx
Introduction Atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with higher rates of morbidity and mortality in patients with heart failure (HF) with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF).1 AF leads to decreased cardiac output, absence of atrial contraction, and irregular ventricular filling, which are harmful effects contributing to the development of progressive HF.

Subclinical postoperative atrial fibrillation: a randomized trial
Introduction Postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF), defined as new-onset atrial fibrillation (AF) in the immediate period after surgery (1, 2), is the most common complication of cardiac surgery (3, 4). Affecting 10%–65% of patients (3, 5), this arrhythmia is associated with increased mortality, and morbidity including stroke and hemodynamic deterioration (6). POAF prolongs the hospital stay and increases health costs.
Prevalence and determinants of atrial fibrillation progression in paroxysmal atrial fibrillation
Methods Study design The RACE V study has previously been described.11 In brief, the RACE V study is a prospective, investigator-initiated, Dutch multicentre observational study (Clinicaltrials.gov identifier NCT02726698). A detailed overview of inclusion and exclusion criteria is provided in online supplemental table S1. Briefly, the aim is to include 750 patients with a history of PAF <10 years.

Harry Crijns | Radcliffe Cardiology
Biography Harry Crijns is a cardiologist with a specialization in cardiac arrhythmias. Dr Crijns obtained a PhD in 1993 on the medical treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF) and has since then achieved significant improvements in treatment through the introduction of care innovation and research by introducing risk scores CHA2DS2-VASc, HAS-BLED and the HATCH score. Dr Crijns is a member of the AER editorial board.
Newly Discovered Atrial Fibrillation: Who(se) Care(s)?
New-onset atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with a significant mortality rate of 5–6% in the first year after the initial presentation.[1–4] Mortality is higher in new-onset AF compared to previously known paroxysmal or persistent AF[2] or when AF is not the primary but secondary diagnosis.[3] The fact that new-onset AF carries a higher mortality risk than established paroxysmal or persistent AF relates undoubtedly to as yet undiagnosed underlying cardiovascular diseases and so far less...
Rising Prevalence of Atrial Fibrillation in the Elderly
Abstract and Introduction Introduction In the last two decades, a rapid upward course of atrial fibrillation (AF) prevalence and incidence is occurring.[1,2] Current projections are mainly from North America and projections for European populations are limited to data from Iceland,[3] Germany,[4] and the Netherlands.[5] In this issue of Europace, Di Carlo et al.[6] aimed to estimate the prevalence of AF in the elderly Italian population, and generate projections on the number of elderly...
Electrocardiographic characteristics associated with atrial fibrillation - What do they tell us?
To view the full text, please login as a subscribed user or purchase a subscription. Click here to view the full text on ScienceDirect. The negative impact of atrial fibrillation (AF) on the morbidity, mortality and well-being of patients is well established [1]. Together with the increasing incidence due to the ageing of the population and the increased prevalence of risk factors such as diabetes and hypertension, this has made AF a major clinical problem [1,2].
Targeting supraventricular ectopic complexes: Which approach should be used and how does it affect atrial fibrillation?

ACC/AHA/ESC 2006 guidelines for the management of patients with atrial fibrillation: full text
8.?Management Management of patients with AF involves 3 objectives—rate control, prevention of thromboembolism, and correction of the rhythm disturbance, and these are not mutually exclusive. The initial management decision involves primarily a rate-control or rhythm-control strategy. Under the rate-control strategy, the ventricular rate is controlled with no commitment to restore or maintain sinus rhythm. The rhythm-control strategy attempts restoration and/or maintenance of sinus rhythm.

Factor XIa and Thrombin Generation Are Elevated in Patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome and Predict Recurrent Cardiovascular Events
In acute coronary syndrome (ACS) cardiac cell damage is preceded by thrombosis. Therefore, plasma coagulation markers may have additional diagnostic relevance in ACS. By using novel coagulation assays this study aims to gain more insight into the relationship between the coagulation system and ACS. We measured plasma thrombin generation, factor XIa and D-dimer levels in plasma from ACS (n = 104) and non-ACS patients (n = 42). Follow-up measurements (n = 73) were performed at 1 and 6 months.
