It was May 1964 when Stockton Globe famously rocked to the sounds of The Kinks, who were on the bill with acts including The Hollies and headliners The Dave Clark Five. This week, the venue once again reverberated to the classic, heavy riff of You Really Got Me as musical Sunny Afternoon began a five-night run. Set against Britain’s lurch from buttoned‑up 1950s to rebellious 1960s, the show traces The Kinks’ chaotic rise, with Ray Davies’ songbook doing much of the emotional heavy lifting.
