July used to be my favourite month. Growing up in Nova Scotia July meant summer. Not the beginning of summer like June. Not end of summer like August. But quintessential summer. Early crisp mornings, prefect balmy afternoons, and evening that stretched on until the sunset after 9pm. School ended in June and by August it was already on the horizon again. But July was four weeks of feeling carefree. It also happens to be my birthday month, so there was Zucchini Chocolate Cake to look forward to.

Staying Cool at Sea

Every year in the tropics the dry season seems to be a little hotter, or the wet season seems to last a little longer. Either way, the struggle to stay cool onboard is constant. We've sailed in ‘the tropics,’ that's within 20 degrees of the equator, for over a decade and have survived without air conditioning. In fact, for the first three years, we didn't even have a fan onboard. Crazy? Possibly, but not impossible or uncomfortable.

Galley Notes : Cooking for One

I am horrible at cooking for one. I mean, I am pretty good for the first few weeks that Steve is away. I cook hot suppers that don’t involve instant noodles, I avoid eating while standing over the sink, I keep the fridge situation under control. Yet somehow, around week five things always seem to go a little sideways. I usually start restorting to snack meals – handfuls of peanuts, hummus on crackers, a bowl of scrabbled eggs. Anything gives me enough protein to satiate my hunger.
