Could a GPS collar replace a roll of wire? Exploring remote grazing technologies
Cows wearing GPS virtual fence grazing collars. (Farm and Dairy file photo) If you read Wyatt Feldner’s Farm and Dairy “Dirt on Conservation” column in last week’s edition, you already know virtual fencing is generating interest among livestock producers. That conversation is part of a larger movement toward remote grazing technologies, a growing category of tools that includes virtual fencing, GPS livestock tracking and other precision livestock management systems.
Silvopasture offers graziers shade, forage and resilience
(Farm and Dairy file photo) Recent weather extremes in eastern Ohio just haven’t been playing fair. A run of unseasonably wet springs followed by late summer and fall droughts has made grazing seasons increasingly unpredictable, pushing many producers to look for options that help pastures recover faster and keep animals performing under stress.
Winter grazing tips for horses
As November ushers in colder temperatures across northeastern Ohio, it’s an ideal time for horse owners to begin preparing for winter pasture management. While grazing may continue into the winter months, doing so successfully requires intentional strategies to protect both horse health and the long-term productivity of pasture systems. Winter conditions present several challenges for managing horses on pasture.
Hay harvest challenges: Moisture, heat and fire risk
Over the past several weeks, persistent moisture has dominated the weather pattern, leaving many farmers feeling like Charlie Brown under a perpetual storm cloud. Frequent pop-up showers, substantial rainfall, saturated soil and classic Midwestern humidity have made it difficult to find a dry window for harvesting. To make matters worse, rising temperatures have compounded the already challenging conditions.
Strategies for managing weeds and restoring pastures after drought
In and around our area of the state this spring, pasture and forage systems have been slow to grow, despite recent precipitation events. This slow wake-up call is most likely a result of the intense drought conditions experienced in the past year and ongoing unpredictable weather patterns. Drought conditions impact pasture and forage systems by reducing soil moisture, in turn affecting productivity.
Regenerative grazing can aid soil
By Heather Neikirk Regenerative agricultural practices, particularly regenerative grazing, has garnered much attention in recent years. Grazing lands represent about two-thirds of global land cover.

Plant Lovers’ Almanac: Hello, spring - time to get dirty
CLEVELAND: Twenty-three thoughts for 23 points from Kevin Love in Wednesday’s 99-98 win over the Dallas Mavericks… 1. One of the go-to moves for Spurs coach Gregg Popovich is to call a timeout during a game when things aren’t going his way and walk away from the bench. He’ll huddle with his coaches on the floor like all head coaches do, but he won’t return to the bench. He’ll just leave it up to the players to figure out what’s going wrong and how to fix it. 2.
