Canada, the USA, and the Evolving North American Arctic Security Context: Balancing Traditional and Non-traditional Security
Arctic Governance, Geopolitics, and Security Article from Palgrave Macmillan Published: Jan. 2, 2026 Author Nicholas Glesby Author Heather Nicol Abstract New ways of understanding security and security threats have emerged over recent decades, in large measure because global climate change is promoting common, yet unprecedented, challenges. These new threats, and responses to them, have played out in ways unique to the North American Arctic.
The Canadian flag
Symbols matter to Canadians. As Canadian society has evolved, so too have the symbols that inspire our collective imaginations. It should come as no surprise that the “freedom convoy” has sparked conversation with their use of Canadian symbology. There are Canadian flags (right side up and upside down), Trump flags and provincial flags alongside known hate symbols — Confederate flags and swastikas — on the streets of cities and at border crossings across the country.
Paddler’s Paradise
Atlantic Canada has coastline to spare. Canada’s East Coast boasts some of the most spectacular sea kayaking opportunities in North America. In Newfoundland, you can paddle down rugged fjords and past towering icebergs. In New Brunswick, you can paddle the world’s highest tides, and in PEI you can even paddle for clams. Nova Scotia offers island-studded bays and scenic lighthouses that are often best seen from the water. Not long ago, we visited several locations on our “must paddle” list.
All Around the Circle
It wasn't long after we moved to Corner Brook, NL, 30 years ago, that we got out the map to find out where the places named in the popular folk song "I's the B'y" actually were. It turns out that they are all along the northeast shore of central Newfoundland in a scenic, island-studded region. Some of the islands and communities have now been connected by causeways, as in the case of Twillingate and Moreton's Harbour, but others like Fogo can only be accessed by ferry.
Northern Nature in the Raw
Icebergs, moose, whales, wild salmon and more… We innocently asked our waitress at the Tuckamore Lodge in Main Brook, Newfoundland, where we might get some good photos of moose after dinner. "Well you won't need to go too far.
Mystical Labrador
If you’re interested in visiting unexplored places, Labrador’s unique landscape and intriguing history don’t disappoint. Western Newfoundland has some impressive attractions, in particular Gros Morne National Park and L’anse aux Meadows. Both are UNESCO World Heritage Sites worth visiting for their geological and historical significance.
Cruising the High Arctic
We were in the middle of breakfast when the first announcement came. “A polar bear has just been seen on the port side.” Like everyone else, I immediately stopped eating and headed out of the dining room door for our stateroom where I grabbed my jacket and camera. Then it was on to the outer decks. But just after arriving at a good vantage point we could see the polar bear slip off the ice flow and start swimming away in the distance.
Exploring our two west coasts
Paddling to Lark Harbour, Newfoundland with Guernsey Island in the background.Photography by Keith NicolWith over 17,000 km of beaches, sea stacks and bold rocky cliffs, you could paddle along a different shoreline of Newfoundland every summer and still never see it all. One area that provides a huge variety of paddling opportunities is the Bay of Islands, near Corner Brook on the province’s rugged West Coast. Over the years we have explored this area many times.
