1 INTRODUCTION Neurofibromatosis and schwannomatosis are genetic conditions characterized by the development of tumors in the nervous system. Historically, these conditions were separated into neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2), and schwannomatosis (SWN) with estimated incidences of 1 in 3000, 1 in 33,000, and 1 in 70,000, respectively (Evans et al., 2018; Huson et al., 1989).

The Use of MEK Inhibitors in Neurofibromatosis Type 1-Associated Tumors and Management of Toxicities

Abstract Early‐phase clinical trials using oral inhibitors of MEK, the mitogen‐activated protein kinase kinase, have demonstrated benefit for patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1)‐associated tumors, particularly progressive low‐grade gliomas and plexiform neurofibromas. Given this potential of MEK inhibition as an effective medical therapy, the use of targeted agents in the NF1 population is likely to increase substantially.
