Taking Power Over Pain with Altius
Every evening when Jeff Pullen removed his prosthesis, he experienced an attack of severe phantom limb pain. “I’ve had pain before but it eventually went away. This is something that I knew was going to happen every single day.” Despite using various prescription pain medicines, nothing helped. Jeff was not alone: Studies have shown that 43 percent of amputees with phantom limb pain have tried four or more different treatments for pain.
A lasting legacy: Retiring Geneva School Resource Officer Raul Arroyo was not only a police officer, but mentor for many of Geneva’s young people
GENEVA — After 20 years in law enforcement — including more than a decade serving the Geneva City School District — Officer Raul Arroyo retired with a legacy that extends far beyond his role. When Arroyo joined the district in 2012, he brought a clear purpose: to build positive relationships between students and law enforcement. From the start, he saw the role as an opportunity to connect with students, be present in their daily lives, and help shape how they experience and understand policing.

Water-Powered Bandage Could Prevent Amputations
Slow healing wounds from diabetes and other chronic diseases increase risk of amputation. Unfortunately, treatments for such wounds are often expensive and too complex for patients to use at home. A team from North Carolina State University set out to create a wound healing solution that was both easy enough for home use and inexpensive. It’s well established that electric fields accelerate healing in chronic wounds.
High Society - Amplitude
When the Range of Motion Project (ROMP) held its annual fundraising climb in 2021, Lacey Henderson was a late addition to the team. With little time to get into shape, she barely reached the 19,347-foot summit of Cotopaxi. “ROMP uses the summit as a metaphor for overcoming life’s challenges,” she later wrote. “But nobody can get to the top of that mountain in solitude. When you get pushed down, someone extends a hand to pull you back up. And then you do the same thing for somebody else.
Artificial Skin Achieves Life-like Temperature
Summer isn’t the only thing bringing the heat. Recently, a research team integrated a temperature regulation system into artificial skin that could give prosthetics a lifelike temperature. While technological advances have successfully replicated the texture and firmness of real skin by simulating it’s exterior, fatty, and muscle layers, minimal research has been conducted that addresses skin temperature, which is an essential aspect of the tactile experience.

Political ecology and the Foucault effect: A need to diversify disciplinary approaches to ecological management?
Michel Foucault has been among the most influential thinkers in the humanities and social sciences from the 1980s onwards. While explicitly Foucauldian analyses are not as fashionable across wide swathes of scholarly fields as they were a decade or two ago, there seems to be a renewed interest in his work among social scientists concerned with environmental issues.

The Banality of the Anthropocene - Resilience
I want to propose an Anthropocene territorialization and a subject-making project in which anthropologists might want to engage. The territory of which I write is a place called Iowa. There are plenty of troubling things about the Anthropocene. But to my mind, one of its most troubling dimensions is the sheer number of people it fails to trouble. For many living in precarious situations, the Anthropocene is already life-altering, life-threatening, and even deadly.
